  1. Lunar New Year Giveaway

Hi everyone! In honor of the upcoming Lunar New Year, I wanted to host some early celebrations and share memories together. Last year we had a competitive event, but this year I thought we'd give everyone an equal chance to snag a mod crate!

    Some Background About LNY:
For any player who doesn't already know, Lunar New Year is a holiday celebrated by nearly a quarter of the world!

LNY uses the Chinese Calendar or Sheng Xiao, which alternates between the 12 different animals of the zodiac. There are also different elements, making there actually 60 different unique cycles! We are currently ending the year of the snake, and as of February 17th, 2026, we'll be welcoming in the year of the horse, or fire horse if you're considering elements.

There are many different ways that people celebrate LNY, but most commonly others may remember it for its red envelopes. Most don't know though that they were originally given out as a way for children and elders to cast out bad luck, specifically in relation to the demon Nian. Nian was a demon that terrorized villages in ancient China, but it was eventually found that it feared bright lights, loud sounds and red which lead to the practice of people decorating with the color and lighting firecrackers. Therefore you can see people celebrating using the phrase Guo Nian sometimes, meaning to overcome Nian.

AS A REMINDER…THIS IS NOT A CONTEST SO WE WILL NOT BE JUDGING YOUR COMMENTS
, it is a giveaway with randomly selected winners.

  2. Most of what I learned about Asian cultures as a young child was gleaned from Sagwa the Siamese Cat. We're talking <8yo, so my memories of the show were all scattered. I remember the first time I got the chance to celebrate the lunar new year when I was older, I really wanted to try a mooncake. I was disappointed to learn those were more of an autumn tradition, since to me lunar=mooncake.

  4. I'm an Aussie and we have a large Asian population here, so we get to celebrate LNY each year. As a kid, my parents would take me to the parades where I loved the dragon parades and the firecrackers. As an adult, I still love to go to festival celebrations as they are fun and vibrant, plus there are always amazing food stalls and music.

  7. I would most like to go to a lantern festival. They’re always so beautiful and interesting. It would be something unique that I don’t feel I’ve seen anything close to.

  8. It was a while back when my family and I went to San Fransico and saw the dragon and lion dances for the Lunar New Year. I was a kid at the time but I remember the lights and colors being so vivid and bright, definitely a memorable night. I would love to go back during the LNY and watch the parade this year, as I was born in the year of the horse!

  11. I actually learned about it from a class project in elementary school! Everyone had to choose to do a poster and presentation from different cultures and I remember being so enchanted and in love with seeing all the different events and the animal representations, my mom and I even made sesame balls and chinese almond cookies to pass out. I still try to go to the events around me sometimes when I'm able too

  12. My favorite memory of Lunar New Years was making homemade dumplings with my parents. My dad would roll out the dumpling wrappers, and my mom and I would fill and pinch them closed. Then after we would steam them in bamboo baskets and eat them with raw garlic, soy sauce, and rice vinegar. I was the most excited when it got to the year that I gave my parents red envelopes instead of them giving to me. Last year was the first year that it was just me and my mom, but we still kept the tradition alive. ❤️

  13. Thank you for explaining about Nian! I feel like it actually woke up a childhood memory of this story i read as a kid where it explained how it all started, it was a little boy being told by his mom or grandma while they were setting up for the event (food and the envelopes etc)
I’d actually really love to go and experience they in person one day.
