What is it? How does it work? First, let's start off wirh a defination of the word 'democracy'. De-moc-ra-cy Government by the people, exercised either directly or through elected representatives. Majority rule. A political or social unit that has such a government. By this definition a democracy can be several different things, but here we're mostly going to talk about the first two points. In a democracy open elections are held, where everyone with a citizienship can vote freely on any candidate running in the elections. But if one or more candidates bribe people to vote for them, either directly with money or with promises of future advantages and they win, then that city/country does not have a democratically elected government and this is no longer a democracy. Some people claim that in a democracy every decision has to be brought up before the people, allowing them time to discuss and vote on the issue at hand and sure, that is applying the democracy rule full out. However, if the people have elected officals, they have chosen these persons to speak for them. Of course, discussing major changes in city management is almost always a good thing, airing different viewpoints from businessmen, the police, artists, teachers, families etc. But in the end it is the person the people elected into office that has to make the call and change the law, or carry on international negotiations, or whatever is on the table and the simply have to trust the offical to do the best job for the benefit of the city/country and society as a whole. That's why they were once voted into office after all. Going back to the statement about non-democratic election results and point 2, the majority rule now. You probably said that my statement was false, simply because the majority of the citiziens voted them into office. I don't agree. Just because you enticed or forced people into voting for you doesn't mean that you were democratically elected. You were elected by a majority ( or you wouldn't have won ), but your government should not claim to be a democracy. It isn't. It is something else entirely. This doesn't necessarily mean this kind of government is bad for the city/country or for that community, but call it what it is; an autocracy or a plutocracy, when there's no more than one absolute ruler. Many of cities/countries are technocracies, where the rules are mainly interested in the technical management of their cities/countries and take little interest in the communities and the people that live there. Looking at the world around me I conclude that most cities/countries in our world are well run, technically. They provide the services we need as residents and visitors. We can raise issues and start discussions and maybe we can institute changes that way, if our elected leaders listen to us. Unfortunately many of them don't. Next time there's an election in your city/country, make sure the candidate you vote for is someone that represents your standpoints, because there's no saying he or she will take notice of your opinions after you put them in office.
Too much government is like a cone of ice-cream, yeah, ice-cream is delicious, but when U PUT MORE THAN ENOUGH ICE-CREAM on the cone, it'll drip on ya and crap, and THAT GETS ANNOYING. SAVVY?
Because people loves gossips, drama and stuff. Every single day pimd community becomes worse than yesterday.
TOO MUCH ICE-CREAM, isn't always a good thing you must keep the ice-cream regulated WITHIN THA CONE YO, Anyways deuces, Have fun yo
Democracy would be a great thing if anyone receving free money from government had to forfeit the right to vote.
It's not always majority rule mind you. In presidential elections the person who get the most ELECTORAL votes get in. That's even if more people want the other dude
How is that such a bad idea.... I live in an area where our same crappy government keeps getting elected because their handing out so many benefits we can't afford. But why would anyone vote against the hand that feeds them? Meanwhile i work hard and pay a ton of taxes to keep the welfare population thriving. Even the founding fathers said that as soon as people can vote for free money democracy will crumble.
Its not like you can point at the system the US has in place and say that it is working.... The National debt in the US has pretty much doubled in the last 6 years. Unfunded liabilities are over 220trill... Have fun diggn outta that hole. It wont happen cause people will keep voting for free shit til the whole system crumbles
The largest source of welfare in the United States are defense contracts and subsidies. The largest social welfare programs are social security and Medicare. Therefore, multistriker, by your logic: veterans, the elderly, engineers, astronauts, college students and whole host of others should be denied the right to vote. Oh wait, you just mean the poor. That's right. Carry on, then.
