--- I clawed at the rock above me, testing if it was stable. Rocks shaked beneath my hand, a few letting loose and crumbling into the air. My eyes squeezed shut, hearing the distinct 'whoosh' of the rock falling through the air. Seconds passed, and it still hadn't hit the ground. I gulped, finally hearing it hit the cement with a satisfying 'clink'. By how much time the rock had taken to hit the ground, I gauged how high up I was, climbing the cliff. I guessed about 500 meters, my whole body quivering at the thought of the height. Shaking my head to clear my mind, I planted my foot on a higher rock, breathing a sigh of relief when it was stable. Pushing myself up, I jumped over the edge and rubbed my hands together smugly. Step one; Climb the cliff to the back entrance. Complete. Only then did I allow myself to look over the cliff. My eyes bulged out of their sockets, surveying what looked like 'ants' walking around the street. The only thought to reassure me, was that once I was out of this hellhole I would get a plane ride back to my station. My pulse eased at the thought. I snuck carefully to the fence protecting the warehouse, approaching it carefully. My hands hovered over the top, ready to grab onto it any second. I hesitated, grabbing a piece of my hair and raising it to the fence. The strand of hair fell to the grass with a loud zap. Leaning down and squinting to examine it further, I noticed the edge where it had been cut was singed. Gritting my teeth, I though 'Perfect'. A smile tugged at the edges of my lips, my eyes landing at a long stick off to a corner of the fence. My fingers grasped around the rough wood hesitantly, but I grabbed it when nothing happened. Grinning to myself, I ran through my mind what they had taught me in Spy Training. My bare feet felt cool against the wet grass, as I picked them up and sprinted towards the fence. Just a few feet away, I stuck the end of the stick into a dirt spot and launched myself into the air, wind blowing my hair back. Had I gone too late? Was I going to hit the fence? Thoughts raced through my mind as I was about land, right on the fence. Giving one last swing of my arms midair, I provided enough force to land just barely past the fence. The impact sent a sharp pain through my back, but the grass softened my landing. Patting myself, I made sure that everything was still intact and had gone smoothly, but came to an abrupt halt when I smoothed down my hair. My auburn, butt length hair had been caught in the fence had been burnt off. It now fell just past my shoulders. Eh, I thought dismissivley. I needed a haircut. Surveying the back of the warehouse carefully, I took in everything. The grey wood of the roof, the chipped blue paint job of the cement structure. Windows were shattered at the back entrance where I was standing, brooms and mops laying around, seeming useful as weapons if all else failed. I could make out sillouheutes arguing. 1.. 2... I counted three figures in the house. I grimaced, wishing I had brought a weapon. But then again, what was the fun in that? Taking a deep breath, I took a running start towards the window, lifting my legs out to jump through a small crack in the window. I brought my knees to my chest, ducking my head in as I pummeled through the window. I rolled on the wooden floor smoothly, the only fault being the nail that scraped my leg as I tumbled on the ground. I withholded a wince, rubbing it carefully. That would hurt later. But now, I would focus on the task at hand. I grinned up at the 3 boys. The element of surprise. Their jaws were hitting the floor, eyes wide with disbelief. The men were just standing there, frozen, eyes bulging out. I knew that my time was running out, so I quickly sprung up and kneed the biggest, burliest man below the belt. He sunk to the ground with a satisfying groan. Barely having enough time to brush the dust off my shirt, I sensed a figure coming up behind me. I spun around with my left leg poised to kick. My foot met his shin with a shattering impact, sweeping his legs right from under. He crashed to the ground. I stomped on his ribs, knocking him straight unconscious. I grimaced at my actions, but quickly pushed the thoughts away. The business was merciless. They had taught me that at a young age, killing my mother and forcing me into the family business. Losing myself in my thoughts, I snapped back to reality at the warm breath on my back. I pivoted around, elbowing the mans stomach behind me, hearing them back off with an 'oof'. "What was that for?" a farmilar voice croaked, pushing himself up and stumbling in front of me. My eyes lit up. "Nick!" I squealed involuntarily, throwing my arms around him and enveloping him into a bear hug. My mind was lost in joy for a few moments, but no later did my mind invade. My only weakness, showing up at my most important mission. I unwillingly pushed away from his warm chest, backing up into the file storage. "Aww, going away so soon?" Nick mock-complained, eying me in a a way that sent goosebumps up my arms. I was rummaging through the files and stuffing them into my pockets. I grinned, hearing the real complaint in his voice, telling me he was no more willing to pull away than I was. My heart thudded crazily, as I led Nick to the entrance. My minds raced with questions, longing to be answered. What was so wrong with this relationship? It could still carry itself, couldn't it? I mean, just because we belonged to enemy companies... I sighed. I already knew the answers to those questions, and they made my heart sink. Hanging my head down, I grabbed Nicks hand, ignoring the electricity that seemed to shoot through my arm when we touched. I led him out the front door, around the back to the edge of the tall cliff. We just stood there, admiring the view hand in hand, until Nick pulled me in to a tight embrace. I laid my head on his chest, inhaling his sweet scent. Just ignoring all my thoughts, enjoying the peace of the moment. "I love you," he breathed onto the back of my neck, sending shivers up my spine. I could sense his warm smile above me. This was it. It was my choice. I could do it. We could run away as he had suggested before, leaving everything behind. Not daring to look back. Or.. We could stick with our jobs. This would be it. I definitely knew the right choice, but... I turned to face him, my eyes glazing past him nonchalantly. My heart was ripping itself into a thousand pieces, but my mind refused to acknowledge the fact. I pushed my heart far away, letting my mind take over. "I'd tell you I love you..." I whispered, begging my voice not to tremble and leaning away from his chest. "But then I'd have to kill you." There was silence for a moment, just the soft sound of birds, cooing around us. "But- But didn't you just tell me?" he finally managed to stammer, sweat forming on his forehead. I looked up, just catching the realization passing through his eyes. But he was too late. I squeezed my eyes shut tighty, pushing his chest with all my force, not daring to look at his helpless, limp body falling off the cliff and into oblivion. The helicopter swooped down onto the top of the cliff, the open door welcoming. I climbed in with my head hung low. My dad was sitting on the pilots seat, a grin on his face that said it all. He was proud. He was finally proud. My heart throbbed. I knew that was the right thing to do. My dad was proud! I waited expectantly for my heart to swell up, for my body to be filled with joy. Instead, I just felt emptiness. A huge, wad of nothingness, clawing itself through my chest. Who knew doing the right thing would hurt so much? -- A/N: Tell me what you think.! It started off as just a short story but I have a pretty interesting plot in mind if I were to continue xD
