Part I Chapter I Her heart pounded fast as she pushed down a stack of cardboard boxes. Perspiration drenched her blouse, making it seem even harder to run. Her breath was shallow and labored as she frantically ran as fast as her legs could carry her towards the heart of the small town. A groan resounded in the narrow alleyway; a sign that her actions had given her a few extra seconds to escape from the clutches of those hunting her. A few valuable second that could decide her fate. Whether she would live, or ultimately, die. And no one would ever notice her disappearance from the face of Earth. The petite female, a jobless individual who lived in a log house in the depths of the woods, relied on Mother Nature for her survival. She fed on berries and wild animals which often roamed free in the forest. But now, the hunter was the hunted. Despite her physical fitness, she was getting tired. But she could not give up. The warm candle light from the sheriff's quarters were a short distance away. If she could just make it there... Hidden against the black of the night sky, the hooded figure locked onto his target, following her every move. Standing up, he reached into his coat. Then he jumped of the rooftop. A bead of sweat rolled down from her forehead and into her eye. Instinctively, she began rubbing it in a desperate attempt to reduce the stinging sensation and regain full visibility - or rather any visibility she could get at night. She opened her eyes, and she saw fabric before her eyes. It was the last thing she would ever see. Weight pressed down on her back and pinned her to the ground. The force of the hooded figure landing on her and pinning her to the ground was already a fatal blow to the human's fragile body. But even before she hit the ground, she was dead. And explosion of blood gushed out from her neck as the hooded figure slit get throat with a razor-sharp blade. Soon, the hunters caught up with the hooded figure. He nodded simply, and the four men lifted her lifeless body from the ground. Within seconds, the five men had once again disappeared into the shadows. There was no trace of the incident happening at all. Except for the bloodstain on the cobble road, which the law enforcement would presume was caused by a brutal fight between citizens.
Chapter II I trudged along the uneven cobble path and through the rowdy market. All around me, the world was moving on. But in my case, it felt as if time and space had stopped. Nothing that happened could make me feel much happiness, sorrow, pain or any feeling whatsoever. It was just like feeling... numb. Nothing affected me. The happenings all around me meant nothing; it held no importance. I had given up on my life, to put it simply. The smell of fish soon wafted through the air and invaded my nostrils. The smell was atrocious; doubled by the fact that it was baking under the scorching heat of the sun. I had the urge to block out the smell, to pinch my nose. But my arms felt as if they were lead-laden. They wouldn't budge, and they only movements in my body were my feet, which was bringing me homebound. I couldn't hear the noisy bargaining all around me. All I heard was my pounding heart and my heavy footsteps. And even then, the slow rhythmic tempo made me feel even more lethargic. Unwittingly, I made my way out of the crowded market and had slipped into a dark, dimly-lit alley - a short-cut home. And without warning, heavy footsteps suddenly reverberated within the alley. As if it were programmed into my brain, as if it were a natural instinct, I dodged sideways, and a blade came whizzing inches from my face, after which it lodged itself deeply within the mouldy wall in front of me. It was weird. Throughout my life, it had seemed as if my brain had a detector for danger. I seemed to know when and how to avoid accidents, to be able to know when I was in a dangerous situation. Not only that, my body seemed to be programmed, just like my brain, to avoid danger. Within those short moments, my lethargic self would be unbelievable noble and agile, often faster than an animal. It was as if I had the instincts of an animal. But my train of thoughts was interrupted as I immediately broke into a sprint. I ducked low and ran, trying to male myself as small a target as possible. Within seconds, I reached the front porch of a place I called home. I barged in throughout the door and looked out the window at the direction I came from. The assailants had disappeared without a trace. My guardian was sitting in his rocking chair as usual, probably sleeping. The aged man often took afternoon maps in his rocking chair as "The rocking made him relax." I turned towards him and opened my mouth to speak, blurting out the chain of incidents frantically, so quickly that I was barely coherent. But the moment I set eyes on him, I stopped dead in my tracks, my mouth wide-open on shock, my feet rooted to the ground. I couldn't help it. I just screamed. There my guardian lay, slumped lifelessly in his rocking chair, a fresh wound across his neck. The old man who had been alive and kicking just earlier that morning, had been murdered. The once rocking chair was streaked with crimson, and below it, a pool of thick blood...
