  1. Be Aware: October: Part 4

When people think of October, three things come to mind: Beer (Octoberfest), Halloween, and Boobs (Breast Cancer). There's actually many things to be aware of in October. Here's four more events this month, and that's still not all. A quick search of October observances shows so much more is going on around the world.

Dysautonomia Awareness: Dysautonomia is an umbrella term used to describe several different medical conditions that cause a malfunction of the Autonomic Nervous System. The Autonomic Nervous System controls the "automatic" functions of the body that we do not consciously think about, such as heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, dilation and constriction of the pupils of the eye, kidney function, and temperature control. Most people have never heard this term, but dysautonomia is actually very common. People living with various forms of the disorder have trouble regulating these systems, which can result in lightheadedness, fainting, unstable blood pressure, abnormal heart rates, malnutrition, and in severe cases, death.

    A Few Facts about Dysautonomia:
    • Over 70 million people worldwide live with various forms of dysautonomia.
    • People of any age, gender or race can be impacted.
    • There is no cure for any form of dysautonomia at this time.
    • Despite the high prevalence of dysautonomia, most patients take years to get diagnosed due to a lack of awareness amongst the public and within the medical profession.

    Types of Dysautonomia:
    • Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS): Symptoms related to reduced blood volume that occur when standing up. This type is rare, affecting only 200,000 Americans annually.
    • Neurocardiogenic Syncope (NCS): Neurocardiogenic syncope is a temporary loss of consciousness associated with a drop in arterial blood pressure, quickly followed by a slowed heart rate. Neurocardiogenic fainting usually occurs while standing. Emotional stress, stressful condition and pain may trigger an episode, especially among the young.
    • Neurally Mediated Hypotension (NMH): Hypotension is the formal medical term for low blood pressure, and syncope is the term for fainting. Neurally mediated hypotension occurs when there is an abnormal reflex interaction between the heart and the brain, both of which usually are structurally normal. Those with NMH may experience lightheadedness and fainting.
    • Vasovagal Syncope: A sudden drop in heart rate and blood pressure leading to fainting, often in reaction to a stressful trigger.
This is common and affects 3 million Americans annually. This type is often self-diagnosable, self-treatable, and resolves itself in days to weeks.
    • Post-Viral Dysautonomia: Dysautonomia caused by a viral illness.
    • Familial Dysautonomia: sometimes called Riley–Day syndrome. Neurological disorder causing insensitivity to pain, inability to produce tears, poor growth, and labile blood pressure (episodic hypertension and postural hypotension). It's seen almost exclusively in Ashkenazi Jews and is inherited in an autosomal recessive fashion. Both parents must be carriers in order for a child to be affected.
    • Non-Familial Dysautonomia: non-hereditary forms of Dysautomia
    • Generalized Dysautonomia: Pure autonomic failure.

    What You Can Do:
    • Donate to a research foundation to find a cute
    • Share information, raise awareness.
    • Seek out medical attention should you experience chronic lightheadedness, excessive thirst, fainting, fatigue, changes in blood pressure or heart rate, blurry vision, incontinence, heat intolerance, excessive sweating, or "bedroom" issues as these can all be signs of Dysautonomia.

Sorry for the lateness, I hadn't forgotten Evie, just had family things and illnesses taking time. Since this was such an information rich section it's earned it's very own awareness thread. I hope to add the last two things I was going to bring to attention in a thread by this evening.

  3. If ATA could cure things, other than attempting to cure stupidity, I'm sure they would.

  4. Attempting to "cute stupidity" you are so smart :)

  5. It's 7am and I'm chasing two toddlers, but thank you for proof-reading, insulting my intellect though? I expected more creativity from you.

Now. Please keep thread on topic, or you may use the back button to leave it.

  6. I was simply responding to what you said. I mean I'm sorry if I can't cute anything for you.

  7. Very nice. ???

  8. May I ask if this is because you personally know someone with this? Or if you are just trying to raise attention for it

  9. Thanks for the info good job?

  10. Tbh it wouldn't surprise me if I did know someone. My husband was just diagnosed with PVC (Premature Valve Contraction) so that may fall under this umbrella. I have been raising awareness for many issues this month and EvangelineLilly asked if I could cover Dysautonomia a week or so ago, so it began as just bringing to the community's attention.

  11. please email them and ss their resposne and share

  12.

  13. LadyD you did such a good job on bringing awareness to Dysautonomia. Thank you so much for bringing awareness to the disorders!!! You did a fabulous job!!!!

  14. Yw, I would have had it out sooner but the house of dynamite decided to have illnesses with a domino effect, kids won't share anything but germs I'm glad I did it justice for you.

  15. To touch on what LadyD said, Dysautonomia is not rare. It can affect anyone. It wouldnt surprise me if people on this game either have it, been misdiagnosed as having anxiety, or have family members with it. LadyD was totally awesome in making this thread after I brought it to her attention. In fact, the Dysautonomia awareness month was finally recognized as October after months and years of lobbying.

Thank you LadyD your the best.

For others trolling, please be respectful because these disorders LadyD has brought attention too are no laughing matters. They are real, they affect people daily, and most have never heard of them.

  16. Hope you and your kids feel better soon!

You did me proud :) Almost everything you wrote was dead on correct :)
