AUSTRALIA DAY Well, hello there, you little former, you! Today (26th of January, for those in other parts of the world) is Australia Day! It’s a day for fun in the sun, picnics by the beach, barbies with your best mates, and beer-fuelled karaoke sessions of Akka Dakka So, in honour of this glorious Aussie holiday, I’m gonnalet you guys in on a few of our customs and sayings, and make you guys Honourary Aussies, especially for today!! What is Aussie Day? Can’t be an Honourary Aussie without a little history first, but I’ll keep this short Australia Day celebrates the day Captain James Cook landed at Port Jackson, NSW, in 1788. There are records of it being celebrated since 1808; however, it didn’t become an official holiday til 1818 These days, it’s a celebration of all things Australian – our community spirit, diversity, customs and traditions, and family and friends! How to blend in with Aussies Alright, here’s the fun part. There are three things you’ve gotta do to blend in on Aussie Day – Act like an Aussie, talk like an Aussie, and buy Australia shaped things(*note: anything printed with an Australian flag is also acceptable ) How to act like an Aussie For this step, you’re going to need a large Australian flag, a cheap Australian beer (like VB or Tooheys, NOT Fosters) a wide-brimmed hat, sunnies, and a pair of thongs (the footwear, perv!). 1. Put on the sunnies, thongs, and hat 2. Tie the flag around your neck like a cape 3. Grab your beer, and don’t let go! Now that you look the part, make sure to tell everyone you love them, break out into song, and occasionally cheer as loud as you can for no apparent reason How to talk like an Aussie Here’s a really brief dictionary of common Aussie phrases you must use on Australia Day G’Day mate! Translation: Hello there, friend. How ya goin’? (also: How’s it goin’?) Translation: How are you? I’m knackered. Translation: I’m really tired. Holy-Dooley!! Translation: Oh wow!! Today’s a beauty. Translation: What a lovely day. Get us another tinny. Translation: Can you please get me another can of beer? These few simple phrases will have you sounding like an Aussie in no time Also, its absolutely crucial that whenever you hear the chant “Aussie! Aussie! Aussie!”,you reply with “Oi! Oi! Oi!” What’s the deal with Aussie-shaped food? I don’t have an answer for you, I really don’t.. but you’ve gotta eat at least one thing that is shaped like Australia on Aussie Day. It’s like an unwritten rule.. Fortunately, there’s usually a lot to choose from AND THERE YOU HAVE IT!! Follow this simple guide, and you’ll be an Aussie in no time Happy Australia Day!!
