  1. Soo, about this Thanksgiving thing.. We don't celebrate it here in Australia, and all my knowledge of it has come from The Simpsons  there are pilgrims and Indians involved, as well as turkey and cranberry sauce..

So, can you guys give me a quick history and fill in the blanks? When did Thanksgiving start, and what was the reason? ? Yes, I could google it, but this way is a lot more fun 

Also, what are some of your family traditions to celebrate this holiday? What are your favourite things about it? 

  2. My family never celebrated Thanksgiving that much either ?

  3. Thanksgiving started when the pilgrims came over from England. They werent prepared for the harsh winters we have over here and nearly starved. The native americans shared thier bounty of food w/ them. However, it wasnt declared a holiday til a long time later and used to be on different days. At some point it was declared a holiday and set to always fall on the last thursday of november (except in canada where it falls in October).

Some ppl celebrate w/ large family get together and eat turkey (or ham if they dont like turkey), and watch football. My family sees it as a time to just be together. Now ppl are going shopping since some stores are opening. But otherwise it is about the food, family, and remembering your blessings from the yr.

  4. Food food food.

  5. Food, beer, and football. That's what happens in both mine and my parents house. 

  6. Thanksgiving is just like Christmas Eve.

Everyone eats a lot then they have a drinking contest with their Grandpa and all their aunts uncles & cousins. Then Grandpa goes home the undefeated champ and calls everyone at 7am the next day to rub it in while all us light weights are still hung over

  7. Hahaha

  8. Honestly Thanksgiving is not really a joyful day to celebrate. If you actually know the history of Christopher Columbus, it was the day that he genocide the entire indigenous people. And had a feast for the "Newly found" land he had aquired. The indigenous people had their arms open to welcome their new "brothers and sisters" when he came and killed the entire population and feasted with his fellow companions and used indigenous peoples heads as balls in celebration for the land. But the holiday is pictured as something else which attempted to make Christopher Columbus as a Great person Who found the "New England" Also known as The United States. Just a foof of thought.

  9. My family tradition is to season and bake a turkey with mashed potatoes stuffing and biscuits. Oh and we HAVE to have green bean casserole. It's not the holidays without it  gotta watch the Macy's thanksgiving parade and then the football games! We have pumpkin cheesecake streusel pie for dessert It's a time to give thanks for family and friends and all our blessings. (Should be a daily thing, but of course it's a day dedicated to showing each other that).
    ??HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE FROM MR.

  12. Good food and good laughs with my family, along with pulling out all the family recipes and making them.

  13.  Thank you, Jackie! Makes things much clearer! 

Julie, that sounds like our Christmas'  my grandfather used to be like that too 

    Baws, that's awful 

    Niah, sounds amazing! 

  14. ? Don't celebrate Thanksgiving.

  15. Jackie left out the details where the pilgrams slaughtered the Indians and took over their land.
Therefore,I will never celebrate what my ancestors did to the native american Indians. But I celebrate Thanksgiving as a day to eat and enjoy all of my family together at once. Turkey, ham, dressing, green beans, potato salad, deviled eggs, etc.

  16.  sounds about right.

  17.  yeah, Camille, I understand why you wouldn't want to acknowledge that.. We had a similar thing here in Australia with our indigenous people too, it's awful  but celebrating your family and friends, and how lucky you are, is always nice 
