This semester at uni, I'm studying cognition and perception, as part of my psychology degree. In short, I'll be learning how our brains make sense of the things we see. What I've learned so far is that our brains are pretty susceptible to optical illusions  Here are a few of the most common tricks our minds play on us All The Faces Our brains LOVE to see faces in everything.. It's thought that this is an evolutionary phenomenon, where being able to recognise faces quickly would increase chances of survival. Recognising faces both near and far, and also a person's emotions via facial expressions would help determine whether a person was a friend or enemy. Artists love to play on this, putting hidden faces in paintings. These are a few more obvious ones Did you see the faces before seeing the finer details? ?Seeing Movement So, this movement thing is kinda hard to explain without a whole heap of background on the eyes themselves, but to simplify it as much as possible, I'll just say that our eyes are constantly moving. Think of how a plasma TV can get burn out. Our eyes are kinda similar, so they move to prevent image burn on our retinas. That's why pics like these always look like they're moving Pretty nifty, huh? Mixed Up Colour Our eyes are like the best camera on earth.. We've got in-built long and short range focus, resolution of around 52 megapixels, auto adjustable for lighting and colour saturation, etc. They also see things in inverted colours, like old school film cameras with negatives. Try this - stare at the nose of one of the pics below for a good 10-20 seconds, then look at a blank wall or piece of paper.. If you blink a few times, you should see the pic in colour Aaaand there are so many more tricks our eyes play on our minds, as well as visual disorders that our minds play on our perception.. I'll be back...
Robbie! Svetlania I was hesitant FireFly, wondering what visual perception had to do with behaviour, but it's everything really
so this is psychology? i actually noticed the finer details first before the actual faces on those paintings .. and those art movements are awesome fascinating stuff
Ahli great thread hun. I love arts like this also. It's fun to see what ppl can do with blending arts together and trying to find the dif arts.
I honestly did try looking at the movement ones and they wernt moving. So does that mean my eyes are perfectly still?
yes, my favourite part of psycology is non verbal communication. But thats not related to this ? My favourite optical illusions are cognitive illusions ?
It's an aspect of psych, Svetlania.. There are a lot of things we study.. I love it too, Faye.. It's really clever And if the pics didn't move for you, DM, they might be on the wrong angle, or your eyes are tired..
