    Misfortune.
    This was a tough one for me, but truthfully all I could think of was “what would be misfortunate event?” And then went with something that terrifies me. Deep water or water I can’t see in is terrifying, maybe not super realistic but I’m terrified that a shark or something would eat me. So anyways I painted just that. How misfortunate would it be to be eaten by a shark, and that’s exactly what happened in my painting.

    And of course the different medium use was difficult. I posted a few pencil sketches and my last post was digital art. The only other thing I’m event half decent in is paint, so that’s what I went with.

    This event honestly has been pretty cool, hope to see more like this in the future.

    " Even her tears were not allowed to fall. "

    ....

    Medusa was once beautiful,
    but she was cursed and became feared by all.

    Her gaze turns people to stone, trapping her in loneliness forever. The snakes in her head remind her of everything she’s lost, a crown she cannot take off. Sh
    e's not a monster by choice, she was made one by cruel misplaced anger. A victim punished for being one.

    Was she really the villain for destroying men
    who seek to decapitate her?

  8. A story of two souls who existed but in wrong right place and wrong time for each other.
    They share the same sky and breathe the same air, but fate bends their paths away from each other.
    What keeps them apart is the quiet misfortune of timing — a cruel reminder that love sometimes arrives only to be left unfulfilled.

    Theme No. 4 : MISFORTUNE

    This final prompt came as quite the spanner in the works, personally...

    In my research, I'd come across several articles which delved into the superstitions surrounding
    misfortune and certain tattoo designs. Whilst these articles varied--based on the authors' ethnicity, culture and traditions--they mostly discussed how specific thematic choices/elements are deemed to court misfortune. That, such "invite" negativity into the life of the person, who chooses to ink these on one's self. Some examples noted were:
    --Macabre imagery (those depicting death, blood and/gore), like skulls, etc., as well as signs, numbers, names from demonology;
    --Known symbolism for bad luck (such as broken mirrors, a black cat/crying cat, etc.);
    --Even, the names of family and friends (most specifically, the name of one's current romantic partner).

    I do not see myself as a particularly superstitious person; albeit, I see no harm in respecting the view of these traditions. In any case, it did give me an idea for my piece...

    I decided to incorporate the following elements:
    --An
    inverted horseshoe, whose open end was said by some to "pour out" burdens upon its user/owner;
    --A depiction of
    a diseased human heart, with some barbed wire around it (to represent heartache and pain);
    --Drooping Lilies of the Valley, which are seen to represent sadness.

    For the new medium requirement, I utilised an assortment of charcoal pencils and sticks on 90-GSM paper.

    Chose to make a paper hanging doll of Coraline. I feel like the paper doll coincides perfectly with the movie itself having a doll being the leading factor to the beginning of her misfortune. Coraline experiences tons of misfortune in her life after moving away and discovering a door in her new home that leads to another world. Her misfortune is majorly heightened when she finds a stitched doll that looks like her and begins to carry it alongside her. This then leads her to the other world where she meets another mother seemingly better than her real one, who then continues the misfortune by enticing her with all her wants and needs. The other mother then tells Coraline to stay in this "perfect world" she must see buttons into her eyes and be like them.

    When I think of misfortune, I think of bad luck and superstitions. With the “twist” for this theme, I wanted to do something I haven’t done before. Something that wasn’t just drawing or painting. With that in mind, I decided to pull a bunch of random stuff from around the house and build a 3d model! With a little inspiration from the creepy in pink furni dorm and this month being Halloween, I constructed a “house” with a few misfortunate things inside :)

    Warning : A lot of popsicle sticks and glue was harmed in the process of making this🥸

    FRONT OF HOUSE:

    Ladder -
    The superstition that walking under a ladder is bad luck stems from various beliefs, including the idea that the ladder and wall form a triangle that is a sacred shape or resembles medieval gallows.

    Bats -
    The perception that bats are unlucky is mainly derived from western folklore. Their nocturnal habits were associated with darkness and evil. If a bat circles or flies into your home, it’s believed to be a sign of bad luck and possibly death.

    Candle with a Blue Flame -
    It’s said that if a candle has a blue flame, ghosts or spirits are present. This is folklore rooted in several legends, such as the idea that ghosts create a "sulfurous atmosphere" or that the flame acts as a guide for a lost soul.

    Jack o Lanterns -
    Carving and placing embers/candles inside of jack o lanterns is said to ward off evil spirits. The tradition dates back to ancient Celtic traditions in Ireland, where people carved scary faces into turnips and other root vegetables like beets and potatoes.

    Black Cat -
    Bad luck from a black cat crossing your path originates from the association of them with witchcraft, evil and darkness.

    ~ Peep that it’s Spooky the Kitten 🤭 ~

    Sidewalk Cracks -
    “Step on a crack n break your mother’s back.” In the US, this is a game from a childhood rhyme. In some other countries, the superstition is rooted in older beliefs that cracks in the ground could be dangerous gateways to the supernatural world.

    FLOOR 1:

    Spilling Salt -
    Bad luck from spilling salt stems from ancient times when salt was a prized and valuable commodity as well as symbol of friendship and preservation.

    Friday the 13th -
    13 is seen as an unlucky number. Friday the 13th is considered an unlucky day due to a combination of historical, religious, and cultural factors, including the biblical story of the Last Supper where Judas was the 13th guest and Jesus was crucified on a Friday.

    Open Umbrella Indoors -
    This superstition possibly originates from ancient Egypt, where open umbrellas were considered a sacred symbol to shield royalty from the sun and opening one indoors was seen as disrespectful to the sun god.

    FLOOR 2:

    Flowers and Plants -
    Different flowers and plants in different cultures are considered to bring bad luck or misfortune. In Italian culture, it’s believed that having a cactus inside the home may cause family tensions or arguments due to its sharp, prickly nature. In Asian culture, lilies are linked to death, funerals and grieving.

    Cracked/Broken Mirror -
    Breaking a mirror is physically dangerous, but it’s thought that it could also damage your soul. The Romans believed that health and life changed in seven-year cycles, so the bad luck from a broken mirror would last seven years.

    Making Your Bed -
    Supposedly, you should never turn your mattress on a Sunday, or change a bed on Friday or you'll have bad dreams. Also, when you are making your bed, you shouldn't interrupt your work or you will have a restless night. Leaving your bed a mess is also said to bring restless nights. There isn’t any clear idea of where these superstitions came from.

    Apple Under Your Pillow -
    Apples have long been linked to love and romance in folklore. That’s where the superstition that if you place an apple under your pillow, you’ll dream of your future spouse, comes from.

    This is my first time making pixel art, made online using a PC (and with a mouse), and it turned out to be very difficult to make. I mean, it's hard when you want to make the pixels look very clear / prominent. It takes a lot of patience to make the pixels one by one. But this is my imperfect work. I hope it can be accepted.
