My family always celebrate Lunar New Year (CNY) each year 🧨, when I was younger we would host it at my mom's hometown; we'll cook many food, play cards, chat with others and most importantly, giving and getting red pockets! We kids always love a good red pockets 🧧 (well cuz yk, it's free money). We don't do it as big as before anymore tho after my grandma died, now we only roast at night and exchange red pockets with out close families. It just been hitting me lately, now I'm almost the age to be giving out red pockets too, from before I'm the one that's been getting it 😭😭😭😭. Oh! Also when I was younger my teacher would show us videos about CNY! Usually it's about the Lore of CNY (and I like it sm cuz I'm a lore-whore lol). Like why people give kids red pockets, play loud music, stick red paper on their door and do the lion dance. It's all because they believe around this time every year a monster wake up, and the monster doesnt like the color red, loud things n the lion dance that they were doing 🤭. (Also in the early days, they dont fill the red pockets with money lol, it's just a symbolic, I'm glad now they do 😅)
My favourite (and only) memory of Lunar New Year is the time I spent the holiday in Hong Kong, a couple years ago. My aunt and uncle, live there and they showed us around and made sure we experienced everything the city had to offer during the most exciting time of the year. The streets were full of life - red and gold decorations everywhere, lanterns swaying in the sky, and markets packed with people buying all kinds of festive goodies. The best part was watching the fireworks over Victoria Harbour. It was one of the most magical things I have experienced in my life. The buildings lit up too with a light show and I realised how badly I want to celebrate this holiday every year. Spending that time with family, surrounded by so much energy and light, made it an experience I’ll never ever forget.
My favorite lunar year memory was when I found out what lunar year was THROUGH pimd🤣 Honestly I was never a forum person nor the latest announcement typa person who would give attention to the pop up that pops up when we open game, I remember searching about lunar year and finding out about the culture, It was super fun because my friend who celebrates Chinese year sent me alot of their traditions pictures and I also got to call them on lunar year! it was super fun and I enjoyed my time with them. It's now one of my favorite thing to look forward to celebrate with them!
So I used to be terrified of the lions during lunar new year (both the southern and northern lions). Like couldn’t look at them up close, but I loved the celebration. So during the lion dance my parents used to put me in the back of the van so I could watch from a distance. When I got older and I was able to use a camcorder, I found out that I wasn’t as scared of them if I looked at them through the lens. Didn’t matter that I was still just as close to them, as if I didn’t have the camcorder up to my eye, but since visually there was a distance I was okay with it 🤣. I finally got so excited when I could feed them the red envelope without wanting to run away. mind you I knew full well they were adults in the costume 🤣
I have not had the opportunity to experience Lunar New Year firsthand, but from a little research I have come to find that it is the longest and most important Chinese holiday and it is surrounded by legendary traditions, meals and festivities. The most interesting thing about the cuisine served is that it is customary for fish and dumplings to be served. These two dishes mean “prosperous.” Other dishes are served alongside it depending on personal preference.I think it would be wonderful to be a part of such a rich cultural holiday celebration.🐉
I dont celebrate the Lunar New year, but when I was small, my dad used to have a lot of Chinese clients, and they would always send us A LOT oranges 🍊 for new year and they were really juicy too. I remember going to school and packing them together with my lunch because we had lots of them. Sometimes I had to bring extra to give them to friends so that we can clear them faster 😆
One of my favorite memories is making dumplings. My mom's friend always invites us over for LNY, and it's such a wonderful experience. Along with helping to prepare the dumplings, we also contribute by bringing necessary ingredients. It’s always so much fun, even though I sometimes struggle with folding them properly. What makes it so special is the chance to be part of her family’s traditions. We create lasting memories together, and of course, we get to enjoy amazing food. It’s a simple but truly meaningful experience that I always used to look forward to 💖
My favorite LNY memory always included my grandmother. Every LNY, we already have a routine that we go by. We would visit the Chinatown, wearing our red shirts as a symbol of prosperity. Watch the lion dance performance. Stop by the temple to pray, light incense sticks, and give offerings towards the Chinese deities. Afterwards, we would stroll down the festive path of Chinatown and buy a lot of 年糕 or sticky rice cakes! We usually buy dozen boxes of sticky rice cakes, because my grandmother loves to send them as gifts to our neighbors. It's one of her way to celebrate and share LNY tradition! 🏮
I don't celebrate Chinese new year but we here gotta agree that people love to see the fireworks they burnall night long. And the cute lion dance😂.
Lunar New Year is not a thing for me as a Indian...but here once I learnt about it..it gave me excitement... especially the red envelope 🧧 ifykyk...deng the stuffs 🎎 seems so unique in their own way I could never explain... I'm so fascinated by the dresses nd the elegance...istg I just love it!! Ps..coming from a drama lover..enjoy<3
One thing I learned would probably be 🤔, is that it differ from western astrology in terms of zodiac, Astrology relies on months, while Chinese zodiac relies on the year someone is born on, each year being a new animal… like this year, a snake.
I learned that Lunar New Year is actually the same as Chinese New Year just a few years back as I used to think they were different from each other. Also didn't find out til later in life that it's not just 1 day of celebration for CNY/LNY but actually more than 2 weeks (16 days). It's super enjoyable at work because that's over 2 weeks of lion dances in each building I go to for luck and prosperity haha
My favorite memory is going to the temple right at midnight on the eve of Lunar New Year to pray and come back later in the evening to eat a warm bowl of black sesame filled rice balls (tangyuan) 🍡
Something that really stuck with me was a YouTube short about a Chinese mom and her two sons. In the clip, she was in the living room with her first son and handed him a new shirt for Lunar New Year 🎆. He thanked her with a smile, and then she asked, “Do you know why I’m giving you this shirt?” He hesitated for a moment, thinking, before answering, “Does it have something to do with Lunar New Year?” She nodded encouragingly, and after a little more thought, he added, “Oh, it’s because wearing new clothes brings good luck, right?” From her voice, you could tell her face lit up with pride 🌟, thrilled that he understood the tradition. Later, she went to her second son’s room to give him his shirt. After handing him the shirt, she asked the same question, “Do you know why I’m giving you this shirt?” He thanked her but admitted he didn’t know. The mom explained, “Wearing new clothes for Lunar New Year brings good luck.” It was a sweet moment 🏮, showcasing the differences in how each son connected to their cultural roots. This story reminded me how meaningful it is to share traditions, even in small ways like this. These moments create a bridge to the past and ensure that cultural values live on. Here’s to hoping everyone enjoys preparing for Lunar New Year—whether by reconnecting with your heritage, learning something new, or celebrating with loved ones. May this year bring you joy, good luck, and cherished memories! Thank you Day for hosting this contest! 💚✨
My favorite Lunar memory is when I used to work for Panda Express and we would give out red envelopes with cash in them
one of the interesting things i learnt was that it’s also known as the spring festival because farmers will often plant crops to signify the start of spring as the sun changes into a new position and the days gradually gets warmer. I also find it so interesting that children will get red envelopes filled with cash from their elders! sort of similar to how at christmas grandparents and other older family members will put money in a christmas card as a gift.
It's one of the best holiday, there will be plenty of fireworks and we get to receive 🧧🧧🧧🧧. I've learned about carefully decorating to invite luck and ward off misfortune. I always wanna see the dragon dance off screen. There's also plenty of food, and everything with family. It's the best ever. Lots of luck!!!

My favourite and only Lunar New Year memory was at an Asian restaurant in India. I tried sticky rice cakes and sweet sesame balls, learning they symbolised prosperity. Additionally the festive vibe and warm people made it a night I’ll never forget. 🙂↔️🧧
my favorite Lunar New Year memory comes from a few years back when I was travelling in Asia with some friends. We had the chance to experience firsthand the vibrant celebrations and traditions associated with the Lunar New Year..mThe streets were adorned with bright red lanterns, the air filled with the sound of firecrackers and music, and the atmosphere was filled with joy and excitement. The highlight of the trip was the chance to witness the traditional lion dance, which was a mesmerizing performance. The dance symbolized the warding off of evil spirits and bringing luck and prosperity for the coming year...The memory of that Lunar New Year celebration in Asia will always stay with me as one of the most memorable experiences of my life. The energy and traditions of the celebration were unlike anything I had ever seen before, and I feel grateful to have been able to experience it firsthand 🤍✨
