How to love a bunny

Check out that qt. Bunnies are great. A lot of people don't know how to care for them, so as someone has extensively researched this, I decided to write out a random how-to for anyone who may be considering.

    1. Bunnies do well in pairs, however it's hard to get to that point. If you have them together as babies, you'll need to separate them when they get fixed and there's a good chance they won't get along afterwards. And you do need to fix them because otherwise they'll either have lots of babies or (if same gender) they will kill each other. They can and will kill/seriously maim each other, they're incredibly territorial. You can't just introduce 2 random bunnies. If you are able, I would say get 2 bunnies that are already bonded because it's incredibly stressful trying to make bunnies be friends.

    2. Many people think bunnies smell. They can, but this is usually due to not cleaning their cage or litterbox or even not having a litterbox. Bunnies are very easily litterbox trained, which many bunny owners don't realize. My adorable son had a few mishaps as a baby where I had to clean the carpet for him, but bunnies will naturally start using a designated litterbox as they get older and learn to hold their bladder. You don't need to teach them, it's instinctual as long as you make an appropriate area. On that note, bunnies shouldn't be in cages, they should be free roam similar to cats. I have a cage, but there's no door, I just put his litterbox inside and a small blanket for if he feels like sleeping in there (he usually doesn't, he sleeps on or under my bed, or sometimes in my closet). Being cramped in a tiny cage can cause bunnies to become overweight and they're more likely to have a hard time cleaning themselves and possibly urinating on themselves which can lead to smell. Free roam. If you have stairs, there should be baby gates, as bunnies can get injured on stairs.

    3. Bunnies get along with cats as long as your cat is not very predatory/interested in hunting.

    4. Bunnies don't like hard wood floors. They need carpeting to gain proper balance and to dig their claws in before hopping, but it should be a rug or something, because they will chew on carpet flooring. They'll chew on the rug, too, but if you rent, letting a bun damage your rug rather than carpet will prevent you from losing money on your damage deposit. In fact, they'll chew on everything. I bought hard plastic covers for all my cords so my son couldn't chew through all my cords, and I put plastic space covers under my couches to prevent him from going under the couches and chewing his way into the couch (which he has done).

    5. They need to eat all the time. Mostly hay, it should always be available. They can quickly die if they don't eat hay/grass within a few hours and their digestive system gets backed up. For water, they don't naturally drink out of bottles and prefer bowls (and will sometimes drink out of human water cups). Heavy bowls they can't tip over are preferable, and easy to get at pet stores. They also shouldn't be given fruit very often if at all, they'll get sick and overweight and possibly diabetes.

    6. They can break their own spines from jumping too hard. This usually happens if someone tries to lift them up and they try to get away, because they are prey animals and don't like being held. If you have to lift one, you have to make sure to use your dominant arm to scoop them around the butt and the other hand behind their head and quickly press them against your chest to make them unable to kick out and damage their spine. Do not ever set them on their back, they will immobilize in a trance state from being too stressed out and they can die from this.

Tl;dr bunnies are unique and a tad needier than cats but less so than dogs. They enjoy the outdoors and many will accept a leash for walks. They're cute and sweet but not very cuddly, altho they'll lick your face if they like you. Go get a bunno friend or two. Thank you.

  5. This is so good. My sister always gets on a huge rant about rabbit care. I kinda lost interest at the treatment centre I went to as a teenager. We had a fair bit of rabbits but they were in the same area as the ginormous pig that hated me so I refused to go in there to say hi 😂

  6. A pig living with rabbits? Mildly surprised the pig didn't eat them. That's a unique situation
