  11. Nouns are gendered in German, and cat is a female one. "Die* Katze" Even if it is a male cat.

    *pronounced dee. it's the feminine "the"

  17. I'm not quite sure why nouns are gendered; I never sort of questioned it. It's something I'll have to look into. Kefo's speculation sounds like it could be correct.

    German isn't the only language with gendered nouns though ー approximately one quarter of languages has some form of gendered nouns.

    German has three genders for nouns: masculine, feminine, and neutral. You can typically tell the gender of a noun by the syllable it ends in; various syllables are associated with each gender and there are very few exceptions to it.
