There was a theory that they actually did live that long, and there is another theory that that length of their lifespan relates to a living memory of them. or that they were the Patriarchs of houses, and their families and lineages remained intact for that long, but idk, it is honestly very strange. It seems like a lie without a purpose, and a very weird one at that. Crazy thing is that nowadays we consider a generation to be 30 years. But back then a generation would have been like 13-20 years with the age of manhood/womanhood being based on the beginning of puberty. So, I think Methuselah is known as the longest, and he lived 969 years like a boss, but that's like 50 generations! which is crazy! I tend to believe in the opinion that it was his house that lived that long, and not his physical body, but I don't hold that belief very strongly.
When I still went to bible study they spent an entire day focusing on this concept. The breakdown was: today, we live much closer to sin now than we did back then, thus our life spans are shorter. If we were more 'godly' we would have much longer lifespans apparently.
It gets taken lots of ways, and that's Christian school. The bit was originally interpreted in Judaism, and that "redeeming sin" thing wasn't big before Christianity.
people of the old testament used to live for a couple of hundred years but God limited man's lifespan for 120 years from when titans were born as children of humans (daughters of man) and His sons(which some believers interpreted as angels)
I think the idea of "godliness" was one main reason I got put off by religion because it made people very condescending towards others. :/
I know some grandparents who are like 97-ish years old, so living for more than 100 years is not really impossible at all (even in this generation).
same here...i almost hated some religions including mine cuz they act like they're the only righteous ones and they keep on noticing other church's flaws but i'm currently satisfied with the church i'm attending atm, the preacher teaches 'nobody's perfect' and that we should not judge other churches just because they have a different views from ours.... i recently learned that christians and muslims both are descendants of abraham and they believe in the same God so they're still brothers in faith, corrrect me if i'm wrong.. yea, i WAS ignorant let's spread love, no hate <3
