You currently cannot change your name without ecs*. It costs 20 Extra Credits to change your name. There is a way to get 20 ECs without paying: you can try to save them up. Sometimes, you get them from the spinner or from jobs, but of course, this takes time. If you want to change your name quickly, then you can buy ECs from the nurse. *edit: unless it's your first name change and your account was made after the new tutorial update.
actually, new accounts (created after the tutorial update) come with a free name change. @op i believe your account wasn't made recently enough to have a free name change, but you can check from the nurse page; it will say something along the lines of "it's free!" instead of "use 20 extra credits" when you click on the "change username" feature. if it says 20ec, your acc is too old and you'll have to buy ec or farm jobs to change names
