Girl in Blue (girlxgirl)

  1. A dullness emits in a classroom as everyone insinuates the greyness of the atmosphere. The sound of the clock ticking makes the anxiousness in all the students throb.

Except for one particular girl in blue. Her name is Luka.

She was as calm as the silence that was outside the building. Filling the questions in the paper, and taking a sip of water in between her work. The tips of the fiber that hangs from her scalp all tinted with azure was befitting the expression she grasped at this finest moment, her lips slightly agape as she scribbled down on her paper in concentration.

Her furrowed eyebrows softened from time to time, her sky blue eyes sometimes taking a moment to survey the class out of boredom. It was just as she suspected, they were all waiting in anticipation for the moment when the school bell would ring, but they were obviously suffering; as they had quite a while to go. She stifled a smirk, as she swept the loose oceanic locks that hung from her scalp to the side. However, something caught her attention from the corner of her eye. It was a girl, a girl that has been constantly catching her attention for the past few days. Luka bit on the tip of her pen as she tried to hide her admiration.

Her place was in the opposite row, and just a couple tables down. It was annoyingly distracting, but she honestly just can't help it. She, in the eyes of the girl in blue, was astonishingly enamouring. Her name was Reilly, Luka recalled. Luka's eyes gleamed with interest as she trailed them down ever so daringly to her chest. Her breath hitched as the girl she was staring at looked up with a bewildered expression. She looked away in a lightning second, trying to conceal her cheeks that was beaming with a crimson hue. Despite what just occurred, she wanted to take another daring glance. And she did. But this time, the palms of her hand covered the lower half of her face. Slowly, she pulled her view from the ground to Reilly.

Luka saw what she didn't expect. Reilly had been staring right back at Luka. She was looking at Luka with fascination. Her arm propped on the table, resting her chin on her palm. With wild curiosity, she surveyed the features of Luka, her cheeks becoming the colour of roses. She smiled genuinely at Luka as she craned her neck. Luka, unable to contain her affections, tried to smile back with much strength but it proved to be fruitless. Too nervous to respond the way she had always wanted to, Luka dove back into her work.

School was over and Luka had just recently hurried off of the building to unlock her bicycle. She trudged with boredom and exhaustion from the excessively long period she shared between the girl whom she liked. The class was as long as any other, but time seemed to drag along whenever she was in class with Reilly.

For some reason, she felt as if someone called her name. And her senses weren't wrong; someone was indeed calling her name. Luka spun on her heels to see who would be the person. Luka wanted nothing more than time alone to ride her bike back home. She always enjoyed the feeling of wind whipping her blue locks back, sunshine beaming down on her olive complexion, but that would have to wait until this person got to her.

To her surprise, it was Reilly.

She was carrying a small stack of textbooks as she jogged over to the bluenette. Luka, flabbergasted from the sight, wasn't even able to process a simple wave in return. "Luka, right?" The redhead asked with a genuine tug at the corner of her lips. A ball seemed to form in Luka's throat as she tried to respond, but she had never spoken to Reilly. Her chest rose as she willed herself to keep calm, and replied sheepishly. "Yeah?" It was intended to be more of a question. Than an answer. She wanted to speak to Reilly more than anything, but couldn't for the life of her figure out what reason Reilly would have to speak to her.

"I just thought maybe. . ." Silence ensued as Reilly averted her gaze to her shoes, but eventuslly managed to finish her sentence. ". . .You'd wanna hang out?" Smiling, Reilly extended a hand. Luka reciprocated her gesture, extending her purple glossed fingernails that she's been meaning to repaint. Reilly's hand was as soft and warm as Luka had expected. The handshake was genuinely sincere as the two shared weak smiles.

Weeks have passed, and they've become a lot closer. They usually have sleepovers during weekends, and they spend most of their free time in each other's homes. They knew that their friendship was morphing into something that meant even more, something with more depth, but they hide it ruthlessly. They pretend that their developing romantic feelings are nothing as they push them aside, and shackle them with doubts in the bottom of their hearts. Each time their faces collide when they sat side by side in each others arms, they wish they had locked lips in that lightning second. And blamed it on the collision. But they couldn't. Their doubts were stronger than their feelings and all they could do is wait. Wait for a sign that would tell them that it was okay to feel this way. To want each other. Nothing had emerged.

It was a Saturday night. Luka had told her parents that she has packed up for the night to leave and have a sleepover with Reilly, and then she went on and on about how fun the nights were at Reilly's. And how she was eagerly anticipating their time together later. The couple smiled and puffed out breath, as if they've heard her tell this a thousand times.

Exchanging hearty smiles, slapping on each others shoulder jokingly and choking on juice. They were having fun, just like every other night. They continued their time flipping through magazines and comics. And dancing to alternative music. They spent an hour baking a batch of star shaped oatmeal cookies, also to the sounds of alternative music. As soon as they were satisfied with the batch of items in their arms, they hopped back up.

"So, are you coming again next week?" Reilly asked in between chewing. "Or is it my turn yet?"

    "I don't know, I'll tell you tomorrow?"

    "Sure."

The room fell in silence. But it wasn't the kind of silence you'd want to get rid of, in fact, it was comfortable. The two sat side by side, and clinked their juice boxes the way you would a champagne glass at an exclusive event.

The night outside was still and dark, illuminated only by the light of half a moon, a single star shining alone in the sky. Reilly rose to her feet, pulling Luka up as well and the two moved to sit on the windowsill. It was a time honoured tradition between the two before they slept.

Reilly sat on one end, Luka on the other as they kept their gaze on the world outside, but their hands intertwined. A harmless gesture, but one that held so much meaning to both of them.

Reilly's eyes rose. Luka met her stare. Faces lingered in amicable silence, then Luka leaned closer. She didn't know why she chose now to do it, but she didn't want to wait any longer. She saw something in Reilly's face. Desire. She saw something else that lingered in her face. Fear. And in that moment with Luka leaning closer, Reilly hesitated.

Luka paused, and Reilly knew she had ruined her chance. They both pulled each other into a hug, sighing quietly into the other's shoulder. The hug was simple, but told a deep story between luka and Reilly. This hug represented their friendship, the fact that Reilly acknowledged Luka, the fact that Luka acknowledged Reilly. The fact that despite their emotional connection, they were too afraid to give into temptation and just break down the wall of fear.

Both girls slept quietly that night. Reilly on one end of the bed, luka on the other. Neither touched at any point, but both were grateful just to have the chance to be this close to someone that meant something to them.
