  1. “You have to kill Lucifer.”

Raven's eyes snap up to meet Jade's piercing blue gaze. A hush quickly falls over the room as the two continue their stare down. Elijah's attention bounces from one to the other, his dark hazel eyes widen in surprise at the sudden outburst. A red flannel jacket hangs carelessly over his shoulders barely concealing the white T-Shirt underneath. His legs spring to life as he nervously bites his lip. The tension in the room becomes thicker and thicker as the quiet stretches on. Raven's eyebrows furrow to form a conflicted frown as a deep sigh escapes from her mouth.

“I-I can't.” Raven replies, breaking the silence.

“Another report just came in. He killed another person.”

“Are you sure it was him? Maybe it was someone else.” Raven's voice is a plea, a desperate attempt at an excuse.

“I know you're having a hard time with this. Look, I know he's your brother but we can't let this keep happening. His powers are out of control.”

Setting her jaw, Raven curls her hands into fists to stop the boiling anger from rising.

“Don't you think I know that? Like you said, he's my brother. I don't think you fully comprehend what it is that you're asking me to do.”

“It's our job to keep people safe. Did you forget about that? Your brother is a danger to them.” Jade's calm demeanor falls to one of frustration.

“It's also my job to keep my brother safe. He's twelve years old. I'm his older sister, I have to protect him. He's the only family I have left.”

Slamming her palms onto the cool metallic table, Jade leans forward, anger now displayed on her face. The action causes Elijah to jump in his seat, apprehensive about a potential fight. Slowly standing, his hands are up in a soothing manner like he was taming a wild animal. He opens his mouth to speak but is immediately cut off by Jade.

“This isn't about you. This isn't about your brother. This isn't about your family ties. It's a matter of right and wrong.”

Raven's body sags back onto her chair, a shaky hand rises to comb through strands of brunette hair. The drooping of her eyelids and bags under her eyes suggests nights of little sleep. The once bright glow in her eyes is now dulled to an almost blank stare. She trails her gaze back up to Jade in defeat.

“I don't know what you want from me.”

“You know what I want. You have to kill him.”

“There has to be another way. I can take his powers away. Strip it from him. Something.”

“You know as well as I do that you can't do that. We can't have someone on the team who can kill someone by simply touching them. I'm sorry, Raven. Either you kill him or I will.”

With that, Jade takes a sharp turn and exits the room, leaving behind the two brunettes to wallow in their own thoughts. Burying her face into her hands, Raven tries to control her breathing. Memories of her childhood flash through her mind. Innocent faces and naïve smiles of children chasing one another. The better days when her and her brother were blissfully unaware of the weight of their powers. Ignorant of the harsh reality of the world. Another memory replaces the happy ones.

    A darker memory.

Laughter echos and fills the house, bringing a light and joyous air. The wide grins of their parents as they talked amongst themselves were suddenly stripped away with a single touch. A single touch was all it took for the look of absolute horror to cross Lucifer's face. A single touch was all it took for the cold, dead faces of their parents to forever be etched in their minds.

It carved itself into the very depths of the brain and made a home. A memory. What was supposed to be a happy moment that would stick with them for the rest of their lives was tainted by the creeping darkness of a power that was yet to be discovered. A memory that shouldn't have existed. But still, it does its job of staying fresh on her mind.

The sudden feeling of hands on her shoulders, awakens Raven from her trance. Elijah's concerned face appears in her line of vision as she brings herself back to the realm of the living. Letting out a sigh of relief, Elijah examines the haunted look clouding Raven's face.

    “Are you okay, Raven?”

“Yea-yeah. I was just thinking.” She offers a small smile to further reassures him.

Nodding his head in understanding as he lingers there, he taps his fingers against his thigh as his eyes flit around the room. Half-eaten, Chinese, take-outs litter the room from late nights along with multiple stuffed trash bags. As the mold make friends with the empty plastic cups that lie scattered across the glass surfaces of their tables. The pile of mess that they call their headquarters would have been almost unbearable to live in if it wasn't for the fact that they were in the spotless eye of the garbage storm. Elijah's eyes finally lands back on Raven as his thoughts had managed to form themselves into coherent sentences.

“Look, Raven. I know I'm still the rookie in the team and I may not fully understand the situation but why can't you just take away his power? You can do that, can't you?”

“I can, but my ability to copy the powers of others applies to that as well. If I take away his power, I will gain it. We can't have someone on the team be a protector if they keep killing innocent people from a touch of a finger. Something like that, no one can control.” She flashes him another exhausted smile before continuing. “But thank you for concern. I have to go see my brother.”

She gives him a small nod before standing and leaving the room.

Raven exhales a deep breath as she stands at the door to her apartment complex, staring at the door knob as her reflection gleams back at her. Her usually well kept hair now has small strands of hair sticking out at odd angles. The once perfectly ironed white dress shirt is now disheveled and wrinkled with the top button popped open. Her thoughts continue to rearrange themselves even from the long walk back home. The whole idea of having to kill her brother makes her stomach wrench in nausea. Raven gathers herself together before grabbing the door handle and twisting it.

The door swings open to reveal a living room painted white to match the color of the tiled floor, giving it a dull, if not lifeless, look. A couch lies in the center of the room, stained from careless spilled drinks. Stacks of books lie abandoned on top of the mahogany table along with a box collection of vinyl records from years and years of collecting. A single painting hangs on the wall, bestowing the room with a smidgen of color and a small essence of life.

Entering the apartment, Raven heads straight to her brother's room, knowing that she would find him there. Coming into the dimly lit room, the outline of his small curling form causes her to rush over to him. Kneeling down in front of him, she lays a comforting hand onto his shoulder. Lucifer lifts his head to reveal tear stained cheeks and haunted eyes.

“Do you want to tell me about what happened?”
Sniffling his nose, he gives a small nod as his tensed body relaxes under her hand.

“I didn't mean to. I-I swear. The other kids, they-they were making fun of me for always wearing gloves. One of the other boys, he took off my gloves. I was only trying to get it back. I didn't mean to. I swear I didn't mean to kill him.”

Fresh tears threatens to fall as he narrates his story. Pressing his head to her shoulders, Raven shushes him as she rubs his head, trying to ease his pain.

“It's okay. Everything's going to be okay.”

“I don't want to this power. I wish I was dead.”

“No, you don't. Don't wish that.”

“I do. I deserve it for killing so many people.”

    “Lucifer-”

“No, Raven. You don't understand. It hurts me. It hurts so much. I can't stand this pain. I wish it would just go away. That can only happen if I die.”

Clenching her eyes shut, she envelops him in a tight hug as her thoughts race through her mind. Memories of all their time together flicker against closed eyelids. The innocent smiles, the careless times of gleeful laughter and hopeful dreams. A new memory replaces the happy ones.

A promise to end his pain.

“It's okay. Everything's going to be okay.”

    He wants this.

As Raven resumes to caress his head, she sends a jolt of electricity through his body. She directs it to his heart, stopping it with a single command. His lifeless body slumps against her as the life was sucked out of him. Embracing her brother’s corpse as tears stream down her rosy cheeks, she rocks back and forth, continuing to cradle his limp body.
