Hey, no bb codes for this but I just wanted to get people thoughts and opinions. So I'm sure most people are aware of the Zika outbreak. One of the places that is really feeling it is Brazil. Well currently they 2016 Olympics is supposed to take place in Brazil, unfortunately because the virus is such a serious scare officials are considering either A) postponing the Olympics or B) changing the location What do you think they should do? Why? I personally think they should change the location. Obviously there are precautions competitors and visitors can take, but I don't really feel comfortable risking it. If they postpone it, when will it be postponed to? Next year? Will they have the virus unwraps by then? Moreover I feel like there should be more effort on the global level to help countries affected by the virus. I don't actually know what's been done, if anything. So anyway, share your thoughts, opinions, facts etc.

I think that the olympics should be moved to a different location. Yes, hopefully the virus will have been taken care of by then, but that isn't a guarantee. Currently, the virus is in the process of spreading further around the globe. Also, many athletes have put in a lot of time training for the olympics and it wouldn't be very fair for them to have to put off their performances for an extra year. Especially because each year more people become eligible for the olympics and those that currently qualify may be replaced by newer competitors.
Maybe they could move it to a new location now and then give it to Brazil during the 2020 olympics since Brazil probably has almost everything set up already?
Margo didn't even think about the competitors changing if postponed. That's an excellent point. I think giving the next one to Brazil and maybe doing something to honor Brazil if they change the location will be a good idea. My college's football game with South Carolina was supposed to be a home game for SC but because of flooding it was moved to our stadium, so we gave their college the key to our stadium and played their alma mater so it was symbolically their home. Maybe they could do something similar for Brazil.
For those who know nothing about the ZikaVirus (Info from the WHO website) Key facts 1) Zika virus disease is caused by a virus transmitted primarily by Aedes mosquitoes. 2) People with Zika virus disease can have symptoms that can include mild fever, skin rash, conjunctivitis, muscle and joint pain, malaise or headache. These symptoms normally last for 2-7 days. 3) There is no specific treatment or vaccine currently available. 4) The best form of prevention is protection against mosquito bites. 5) The virus is known to circulate in Africa, the Americas, Asia and the Pacific. Signs and Symptoms The incubation period (the time from exposure to symptoms) of Zika virus disease is not clear, but is likely to be a few days. The symptoms are similar to other arbovirus infections such as dengue, and include fever, skin rashes, conjunctivitis, muscle and joint pain, malaise, and headache. These symptoms are usually mild and last for 2-7 days. Potential complications of Zika virus disease During large outbreaks in French Polynesia and Brazil in 2013 and 2015 respectively, national health authorities reported potential neurological and auto-immune complications of Zika virus disease. Recently in Brazil, local health authorities have observed an increase in Guillain-Barré syndrome which coincided with Zika virus infections in the general public, as well as an increase in babies born with microcephaly in northeast Brazil. Substantial new research has strengthened the association between Zika infection and the occurrence of fetal malformations and neurological disorders. However, more investigation is needed to better understand the relationship. Other potential causes are also being investigated. Transmission Zika virus is transmitted to people through the bite of an infected mosquito from the Aedes genus, mainly Aedes aegypti in tropical regions. This is the same mosquito that transmits dengue, chikungunya and yellow fever. However, sexual transmission of Zika virus has is also possible. Other modes of transmission such as blood transfusion and perinatal transmission are currently being investigated.
Changing venues is not an easy feat for the Olympics. Countries take years to prepare for an huge event such as that. You can't just pick up the Olympics and move it somewhere else. Easier to postpone than move, but it is unfair for everyone involved regardless.
Tbh there isn't a chance in Hell they will move it, think of all the hundreds of millions Brazil has spent .. The Olympics takes a monumental investment from the host country Will NEVER EVER happen, there could be a zombie outbreak and the show gonna still go on ??
Too little too late. Stadiums are already rented out, tickets/hotels already booked, merch is already made, participants already trained...
I think it would make more sense to postpone the games. Cities start preparing to host the Olympic games years in advance. Usually a bunch of money is poured into improving the infrastructure of the city and hiring city employees. Maybe they could postpone it to a different time of the year when mosquitos aren't as numerous. I remember a bunch of people worrying about the heavy smog in Beijing, which makes almost everybody sick, yet they had it there anyway. I live in an area threatened by West Nile Virus, which is also carried by mosquitos. When an ares tests positive, they send out these trucks to spray the area down with pesticides. We also get letters telling residents how to cut back on mosquito growth (ex: pour out or treat stagnant standing water where mosquitos love to breed). I would think that Brazil is doing the same things. Spectators and athletes could also wear insect, and the torches could be citronella scented. Of course, none of that works 100%.
It's not fair to postpone it, Brazil has spent billions on preparation and it's too late not anyway since it's so close. Potentially it's also closing the stable door after the horse has bolted since zika is doing the annoying thing viruses do and travelling. It's been found in Africa I believe and they're expecting it in the southern states of America by summer. Get out that insect repellent chaps.
