Simple philosophical discussion thread. Pimd, being a college simulator and me, having a test on this; I come to ask your opinions on the differences between education and indoctrination. Where education here is more specifically the education provided by academic institutions rather than the basic education we receive from our first instances of consciousness. Although perhaps, like how we learn to speak, we also learn the social norms from early on. Gender roles e.g. Girls like pink. Ye. Also perhaps try to see education, say in science or philosophy, as a way of teaching someone and familiarizing them with the previously explored issues and main theories and then, as education progresses and becomes more specialized, introducing them to the current state of discussion(discourse) and more contemporary standpoints and views on certain key issues so that they can actually have a valued and up-to-date understanding of the field. Sorry. Rambling. Messy. Get on with it.
You can no longer tell people to leave your thread. On topic: this is a complete mess and makes no sense.
I think that the difference is quite apparent, to me, what separates these too is the fact that Indoctrination forces one to believe in what's taught and does not allow us to criticize it when in education we're not coerced into believing, acting or thinking in a certain way.
We are all forced to learn English and Maths in primary school. and they are considered to be true.
When you look at the term "indoctrinate", it basically says that you are taught a certain belief set and you must fully accept it and not consider other ideas or opinions. Education isn't necessarily like that because while you're taught these subjects, you're free to explore just how true the information is. Also, education depends on where you are as well. Education in America is very different from education in Sweden, for example. But the very core of indoctrination is how set it is in its ways.
Interesting. A key difference is how the establishment expects you to hold the information you have been given. When it's indoctrination you must hold one opinion. In education, biases are acknowledged and other sides of arguments are heard and given good marks in tests even if not the mainstream. So perhaps indoctrination is just about introducing you to one side of the argument. To a biased standpoint and the other side isn't given credence. I like it.
Education is showing students how to calculate 2 2 = 4 Indoctrination is simply forced 2 2 = 5 But i think practically in some country, education is mixed with a bit indoctrination.
