#GivingTuesday

  1. So, just wanted to make a short thread to let everyone know about another tradition, albeit new, of this time if year.

    Giving Tuesday

You have heard if Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and maybe even the lesser known Small Business Saturday. But generally even more unknown is Giving Tuesday.

It was started in 2012 by a group of thinkers from 92nd Street Y & The United Nations Foundation, in response to the commercialization and consumerism of the post Thanksgiving season.

Some of the founding partner organizations were, Mashable, Skype, Cisco, Microsoft, Sony, Aldo, Case Foundation, Heifer International, Phoenix House and Starwood Hotels.

The idea of the day is that after shopping, sometimes to excess, for you and your loved ones, is to take a day to give to those less fortunate. Numerous charities and foundations are in need this time of year, whether it's the bell ringing red kettles outside of stores, or a fund site online. Every little bit helps.

Just saying maybe instead of buying cats by the dozens for a game, use at least some of your spare money for those in need of your help today.

    Thanks for reading

  2. Wonderful tradition, I hope it carries on many years. The end of your post though, you assume people buying cats have given nothing to charity? Why can't someone spend on a game and give to the less fortunate?

  3. Just because people are buying cats by the dozen, doesn't mean they don't have the money to give to charity, or that they aren't donating to people in need. Quite the opposite I'd imagine. There's also a difference between cash and credit/debit. I'm more inclined to give to charity when I see a person actually putting effort into their cause. Which means standing outside in subzero temperatures ringing a bell. I always donate to those organizations. I'm less inclined to donate online, simply because I don't like putting my card numbers into websites that are dubious at best. I'm sure there are plenty of people that share my opinion.

The cause is good, but you're attacking the wrong people. Shouldn't this be directed at the penny pinchers rather than the people that you know are prone to shoving money everywhere?

  6. Love this!

  7. This was nice...then got messy at the end

  8. Mleh, ok, ok, while buying dozens of cats for this game, remember to give to those in need also.

  9. How do you know we're forgetting in the first place?

  10. Look never said you were forgetting. Just a reminder is all. I just wanted to make a simple thread to REMIND people about the less fortunate. That's all. People remind other people of things a lot, doesn't necessarily mean they did forget but rather that they don't want to or to make sure they didn't forget.

  11. Reminding would imply we forgot.. How do you know someone didn't donate BEFORE buying "dozens of cats"?

  12. I don't, like I said it's a reminder. Like when your mom reminds you to not spend all your time on your phone and clean your room? You are sitting in the sty, you know it needs to be clean, you didn't forget. Maybe your homework is done. Either way, she is reminding you to get it done. Now, please stop arguing with me on a thread that had nothing but good intentions to begin with and go clean your room, or do your homework, whichever may need to be done. Just wouldn't want you to forget to do either. K?

  13. Been about 15 years since I was reminded to do either, no homework to be done in 5 years. Silly reminder. But anyways, just wanted to remind you it's possible to donate before buying dozens of cats. We donate year round :)

  14. I realize that and corrected myself . As I said, I had good intentions when writing this thread. Glad to hear you donated.
