1. Emo is short for emotive hardcore, a style of post-hardcore music. It has deep lyrics, sloppy riffs, etc. Most people think of My Chemical Romance or Black Veil Brides as emo music, but that is actually emo-pop. Rites of Spring, Sunny Day Real Estate, and Secondhand Serenade are real emo.
2. Emo is a style. Most emo people wear band tees, skinny jeans, studded belts, Converse, and choppy hair. This DOES NOT define emo, however.
3. Emo is a feeling. Deep, quiet, and sensitive people are more often emo. Emo is not about cutting, crying, and depression. Anyone who says “I’m emo cuz I cut and shop @ Hot Topic!!!” is a poser.
Goth, scene, skater, and even gangster are sometimes confused with emo.
