Okay, so this craze The Ice Bucket Challenge has gone viral, and now like everything else people are trying to "do something crazier" I think somewhere along the way people have forgotten the reason of this challenge, Many challenges like this have created huge awareness, here in Ireland within two days 400 Million was raised for Breast Cancer Research through the #NoMakeupSelfie! It is a great way to raise money and awareness for this horrible disease! I just think it's all turned into nominating your best friends and after they pour a bucket of ice water over their heads that's it, they have a laugh about it and nothing more! I'm not suggesting this is everyone, the majority of people put up proof they have donated! Anyway, ALS, Motor Neuron Disease (MND) here is a horrible disease and so far there has been no proof from research to find a way to reverse the damage done to the neurons! MND is not as well known compared to other horrible diseases such as cancer, I'm not implying anyone is worse than the other, anything that can take a life is disgusting in my book! I feel not many people actually know much about this disease and the effects it has on people, I don't think we know how hard it is for someone to become completely dependent on someone else, I don't think we know how hard it is for someone to come to terms with their lack of grip, simple things like texting, making a cup of tea become such a challenge! And finally losing the ability to breath unaided! So what is MND?? Motor neurone disease (MND) is also called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and Lou Gehrig's disease. MND is a rapidly progressing, neurological disease. Motor neurones are nerve cells that control the voluntary muscles of the trunk and limbs, and affect speech, swallowing and breathing. Damage to these nerves causes muscle weakness and wasting. People with MND become increasingly disabled, and may lose speech, have difficulty swallowing and eventually die from respiratory (breathing) failure. As I said this is the same as ALS. So I'm sorry if this thread is too long but I never felt the need to say anything until I was flicking through the usual ice bucket challenges on my newsfeed when I came across a video from a young guy Anthony Carbajal, it started off so funny but in the end it had me in tears, I suggest to everyone to watch it and support it! You may not even develop MND until you're 40 years of age you don't know if this horrible disease can affect you! Anyway to everyone who has donated to this organization, fair play and well done, for those of you who haven't yet been nominated! I nominate you to do the ice bucket challenge, and to donate anything from 1€/£/dollar/yen etc. to ALS or MND! It's a great cause and hopefully someday there will be a cure! Thank you for saying what had to be said. So many celebrities have done the ice bucket challenge but how many have done the ALS ice bucket challenge? If they had just taken the time to mention the point of the challenge, so much more awareness and funds could've been raised. It's so sad to see how many people have missed the whole point of the ALS challenge, and managed to turn it into a joke. ?
