Solar powered torches are charged by energy from the sun (solar power) and then used when it's dark. After dark tends to refer to when the time after it has first gone dark. So if it goes dark at 8pm, anytime after that would be after dark. A tortoise without a shell would die. It would also be homeless and naked.
