[by Tammy's rehomer] A Tribute to 7mth-old Tammy (April 2013- Oct -2013) Tammy was a puppy rescued four months ago together with her 4 other siblings Carrot, Sky, Mocha and Titus. She was fostered by Priscilla for one month before she found a home. During that time, she was a good natured dog and showed zero sign of aggression. We considered her lucky as she was the first to be adopted. However, the "happy ending" was a short-lived one and she was put to sleep on Monday 7th Oct 2013 by her “family”. Tammy (renamed Coco) was rehomed to Alison McElwee and family on the 1st of June 2013. During the two rounds of house visits, Tammy was settling down well and seemed to get along very well with Alison's two young kids. The only issue cited at that time was Tammy had not been toilet trained and the usual puppy nipping due to teething. Other than that, everything was getting on fine. An adoption agreement was then signed, in which it clearly stated that in the event the adopter chooses to give up the dog, the rehomers have to be informed so that we can take our dog back. Four months later, a shelter received an email from Alison, indicating that they adopted the puppy from me and asked if they can advise on what to do as the dog was aggressive. The volunteer contacted me and I immediately called Alison to understand the situation. She mentioned that the puppy was having aggression issues and had bitten her and her kids. I told her we understand her concern and will definitely take back our puppy, and reminded her yet again not to leave the puppy anywhere else. I mentioned that at her age, Tammy is almost fully grown and would not be easy to rehome. I asked if she can help to support part of her boarding fees since we have to board her somewhere while trying to rehome her. She agreed that was reasonable and would get her husband to contact me and discuss when to bring Tammy back. I waited but did not hear from them for a few days. When I finally managed to get hold of her, her reply was “hi we found someone for Coco to go and she left yesterday afternoon” I asked if she could at least let us know where Tammy has gone to. She refused and asked that I stop contacting her. Anxious, I went to her place on the same day to enquire but still, she refused to reveal Tammy's whereabouts. I left but not before creating a scene. Left with no choice, I proceeded to make a report at the police station and sought advise on what could be done. The next day, another rescuer went down with our friends to see Alison who demanded that they leave and subsequently, called the police. Police arrived and we sought their help to ask Alison if she could reveal Tammy’s whereabouts. We only needed to know where our puppy has gone and that she was safe. To our despair, she told the police that Tammy was sent to the vet to be PUT TO SLEEP. We immediately rushed over to clinic and confirmed that Tammy has been put to sleep. Our minds went blank. We managed to speak to the vet who claimed that she put the dog to sleep because the dog was aggressive to Alison and her kids ‘s on numerous occasions. Ironically, she also mentioned that the puppy was a BRIGHT, HAPPY and HEALTHY dog except for some mites issue. Dear friends, I am sharing this story to create awareness of what had happened and hope such tragedy will never ever be repeated again. It was a big mistake to trust the family that they will return our puppy and a mistake too late for regrets. Please help to share the post to let people know who should be banned from adopting our dogs. Lastly, Rest in Peace Tammy. I am really sorry. -- Guys, u just read a story about a cute little dog being put to sleep.I almost cried reading it.Ask ourselves. Should we really allow this in out modern society?
I agree 100%! I love my dogs and wouldn't never do anything to hurt them! Too bad you could never stop someone from buying a dog. If they're banned from every dog adoption center in the world, they'll just buy one offline. It's really sad to even think out dogs getting abused.
I don't get it. I mean asking her to pay part of the kennel fee when you asked for the dog back after it was biting her and her children is ridiculous. She could of just taken a dog to ASPCA though instead if putting it to sleep. _____________________________________ by OhSnap on Thu Oct 17 , 2013 9:48 am Mmhmmmm ?
I don't agree with putting all the blame on her and calling her a dog killer, She was in a tight spot kennel are not cheap for animals, I had to board my cat for 4 days and I was lucky enough to be able to do that and it cost me only 50 dollars. Imagine a full frown dog, that would be extremely hard to adopt out because it was agressive. It could be in the kennel for weeks upon months, of the orginal owner wanted the animal back she should of taken the responsibility of paying that instead of asking the lady in the photo too. I promise that why she decided to have the dog put to sleep instead of returning it, because the lady had a family to take care of and couldn't afford to pay half a kennel bill for who knows how long until the dog got adopted out.
She could have consulted a professional or return the dog. Do u personally feel there is a need for her to actually send the dog to a vet and put it to sleep? Without even asking the rehomer? Just asking for your opinion
No I don't there's places like ASPCA that could of taken the dog and helped it, but for the previous owner to ask for the dog back and to ask her to cover some of the kennel cost was ridiculous and not right. Kennel arnt cheap by any means, and full grown dogs have very slim chance of ever getting adopted out. Imagine that kennel bill racking up when you have a family to feed and cloth. It's not cheap at all.
How do you know the dog was even aggressive? Just because the person who owns it said that it was, doesn't necessarily mean that the dog is aggressive. I worked at a animal shelter, and if you say that the dog is aggressive they waive the fee for taking the dog into the shelter, what people don't realize is that animal automatically gets a red card and is 99.9% of the time put to sleep because of aggression even though the animal could be sweet as pie and us at the shelter can see it is. People are cruel, they treat animals like little teddy bears to be bought and traded. It's disgusting if you ask me that the dog was put down. The woman could have very easily said she did not have the money for the kennel and left the others to decide what to do with that dog, instead of going to the vet and putting the dog down. There were opportunities given to her she just didn't take them. And the fact that she refused to tell them of what happened to the dog is also saddening.
Oh and places like ASPCA also put dogs down if a owner indicates aggression. Also with shelters comes the dog getting kennel cough or leukemia. ?
And adult dogs do have a chance to get adopted out, they're adopted out just fine. You don't know what breed of dog it was, it could have been a yorkie for all you know and that dog would've been adopted out right away. Also a dogs puppy stage varies for bigger dogs they have a longer puppy stage. Just because it's not tiny and new doesn't mean it can't be adopted out and retrained! ️
I agree, the woman could have answered "No" when asked to split the bill. It seems all the original owner wanted was the dog back and make sure the dog was safe. The second owner was hiding information as to what she did with the dog, so believing that the dog was actually aggressive, is highly unlikely. People need to remember when it comes to animals, it's like having another child. They are bound to do things that drive you insane, chew things up, make messes, etc. So makes me question if things get difficult with her children, how she will deal with it? Just because the dog does something "bad", doesn't mean to go and kill it!
