It's been 10 years since SARS and I'm sure some of us would remember the panic back then. Recently, it has come to my attention that the middle east respiratory syndrome coronavirus(MERS) has claimed the lives of 34 people worldwide and this is 55% of all who were infected. Let's hope this virus can be contained and a suitable cure will be found.
I remember. It was spread by rodent droppings. So I'm safe it only affects poor dirty people that refuse to join the rest of us in a clean first world country.
Spread by rodents droppings? I don't think so. Although both SARS and MERS originated from animals, it is actually close human contact that will spread it. Anyone can get it, as long as you are physically close to someone infected, you could get it too. What's more scary about this new MERS is that it has killed 55% of the 61 people who contracted it.
It's the fatality rate I'm concerned with. So far, 1 out of 2 people who contracts it dies. That's real scary and what's to say the virus won't spread?
And this is a tragic reminder of the SARS virus. I still remember the streets were dead silent as no one dared to step out of their houses during that time
It has a high fatality rate yes but so far doesn't look to be massively contagious or would have spread by now. If the virus evolves we could be buggered but to put it in perspective, some strains of Ebola have a case fatality rate of 100% so this one isn't quite so scary (Ebola seems to originate with fruit bat droppings). For the other virus with rodent droppings, are you thinking of Hanta virus or weils disease?
High fatality rate yes but look at the backward country that it originated in. They have hardly any health care system. Stop being such a worry wort you hypochondriac it's not the apocalypse just yet.
