They're, There and Their

Discussion in 'Off Topic' started by iDontLikePeople2, Apr 28, 2013.

  1. I noticed a lot of people using the words there, their and they're in the wrong contexts. A lot of people will say 'who cares about spelling?'. Well, it's really been bugging me, so I care.Below are the definitions of each of these words.

There: In, at, or to that place or position: "we stayed there eleven days"; "I'm going in there"; "the opportunity is right there".

Their: Belonging to or associated with the people or things previously mentioned or easily identified.
Belonging to or associated with a person of unspecified sex: "she heard someone blow their nose loudly".

They're: They are. Shortened. "They're happy".

  2. At least someone is saying something about it lol

  3. Sometimes I slip >.<
Feel stupid when I use "there" instead of "their" And I even consider myself to be pretty good when it comes to grammar. when it actually matters

  4. I Noticed that I don't bother reading long threads

  5. Exactly!!!

Its crazy, too, because sometimes while texting, I shorten my words and put dere, dey're or deir...and people be like thats stupid, you dont know how to spell. Yet, they put there, they're or their... to, too or two or words that sound similar, different spelling in the wrong sentences.

Im like no, you're stupid, because you're not using the correct word.

  6. The incorrect use of homophones is bad grammar not bad spelling... since this is a grammar nazi thread

  7. Look at you with your fancy words

  8. IF YOUR SO GRAMMAR NAZI THEN WHY YOU FORGET .

  9. Hippie_Gyrrrl, I just want to make sure you understand how your paragraph you made sounds when speaking it properly.

"Its (< possessive) crazy, (< pause) too, (< pause) because sometimes while texting, (< pause) I shorten my words and put Dere, dey're or dier (< You have that part right actually but you didn't use the Oxford comma and that bothers me) ( http://imgur.com/gallery/fycHx < reason why the Oxford comma is important)... And people be like (< acted like) thats (< non-existent possessive) stupid, (< surprisingly got this one right, perhaps by chance) you dont (< I'm afraid I'm teaching my phone that missing apostrophes is ok while I'm writing this) know how to spell. Yet, (< pause) they put there, they're or their (no Oxford comma )... To, too or two () or words that sound similar, different spelling in the wrong sentences (incomplete sentence). Im (< "Im" isn't a word, but "I'm" is) like no, (< pause) you're stupid, because you're (< got it) not using the correct word."

I'm sorry, but I couldn't let myself read you're post that is calling people out on using improper words without mentioning the several errors your post has. I felt like I was having a brain aneurysm while trying to read that. If you're going to act as a "Grammar Nazi" does then you shouldn't riddle your posts with orthographically horrific errors.

  10.  Just to be annoying...

    * your. Not 'You're'.

  11. I'm extremely happy you made this. Improper grammar/spelling, especially with the words there/to/your is one of my biggest pet peeves.

  12. Hmmm, I must not have seen an autocorrect there. I recall typing each one in correctly. I probably should have proof read but I had to go somewhere. Good catch though, my phone tries to autocorrect to undesired words all the time now because of forced misspellings.

  13. Ugh stop pressuring me D:<

  14. YAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAY!

  15.  I feel the same way about to, too and two. It pisses me off when someone says

"Me to"  It's not hard to put an extra o..

  16. Also the wrong...

    Your, you're...

    Our, are...

    To, too, two....
