  1. Day

"When you get really scared you call me. When you start to lose all sense of whats around you, your breathing becomes ragged and your heart beats faster thats when you call me. Your gonna have to do a lot of guessing. He'll seem agitated, reserved, angry, snappy. Be empathetic or you die. He will kill you. When you hear the footsteps you call me but its probably too late. You gotta keep thinking about the worst case scenarios; let it freak you out. I want you delirious. Thats the only way to get you out. Alive. If you don't call I'll come and if when I do you're tied up or in the oven or he's hitting you, I'll help you. Or die trying. And if you're dead... I'll organise the funeral. I'll always take care of you baby. Always." Xavier wipes the wetness of my eyes away with the pad of his thumb.

    "I love you, Xavier."

    "I love you, Day."

I clutch onto his large frame because he's the only thing that matters.

"I have to go back tomorrow."

"Shh." His eyes squeeze shut and I pull his head into the crook of my neck.

"You can cry for me Xay."

"But I'm supposed to look after you. You're supposed to cry not me."

"Since when... have I done... what I'm supposed to do?" I reply whilst stroking my finger over his cheek.

"You know I'd take you away now if I could."

"It's okay. You can't protect me from a monster."

    "I'm gonna try."

I pull him into my chest and close my eyes. I haven't slept in so long.... For tonight... f*** the monster I'll see tomorrow.

  2. Xavier

My eyes are awoken by a bright light; my eyes flutter open and when the haze of white lifts I see Day. She's pulling the curtains of my room behind the hooks. Her bronze, wavy locks hang down to her waist.

"Day." I say, holding my arms wide open, my fingertips brush the sheet beneath me. Quickly, she whips round, smiling sadly. She has to leave today. I hate myself for having to let her.

I enfold her in my arms and bury my head into her neck, placing small kisses to the fair skin when appropriate.

"Lets go for a walk." she says, her eyelashes brush my forehead, making me lift my head to look at them. The blue of her eyes is so bright you could almost mistake it for silver. Almost, but not quite.

    "Where?"

    "In the frost."

"Why do you like the cold so much?"

"Heat makes him sweaty and frustrated. Hot and irritated. Summers involve agitation and agitation involves situations I'd rather forget." I winced. My poor, broken Day.

Her strong arms tug at my own as she struggles to drag me out of bed. A grin spreads across her face and I think how ridiculously happy it makes me that I put it there.

Eventually, Day manages to get herself and I dressed; considering I'm not willing to oblige to much I see it as an impressive achievement. The wind bites at our cheeks, flushing our faces and refreshing our minds. The morning frost crunches underneath my black boots and I thread my fingers through Day's. I have to make the most of this. Of her. We don't know if she'll even make it much longer.

I have to get her away...

Before he can get his hands on her...
