    Madison POV
It was around 2:55 on a Friday afternoon in late November. I waited in the almost empty Clarke Prep girls locker room. I was in there with my friends Megan and Holly. We were all sitting Indian style on the same bench. Holly was facing me and Megan while I sat behind Megan braiding her hair. Holly was a non stop chatterbox, going on and on about her new boyfriend and how sweet and cute he was. Megan and I sat there, uninterested, making the occasional remarks such as, “Aw, how sweet,” and “I wish had somebody like that!” Suddenly, the bell rang. Three o’clock. I was free for the weekend, and I was going to spend it with my best friend. I jumped up and ran over to my locker. I grabbed my backpack, purse, gym bag, and duffel bag out of the mess in the locker. I slammed the locker closed and raced over to the door.
“Bye y’all!” I exclaimed, rushing out the door into the hallway, not waiting for their response. I raced down the hall, the horrid odor from the weight room pungent in the hallway. I opened the door to the dusty, red dirt and rock parking lot. My best friend, Maggie, was sitting in the bed of her brother’s banged up Ford F-150 which was backed up to the door. Her brother, Zach was sitting in the driver’s seat with his girlfriend, Jamie, beside him. I slung my bags into the truck bed and hopped in, taking a seat beside Maggie.

“Gee, you tore outta there like your butt was on fire,” She smirked, her dirty blonde hair going crazy because of the wind.

“She would not shut up about her new boyfriend,” I told her, pulling my caramel hair up in a neat bun so that it wouldn’t be affected like Maggie’s.

    “Who?”

I took out my phone, texting my mom that I was with Maggie. “Holly.”

She laughed, “Sounds about right.” She pulled out her phone. “So anyways, how’s school?”

“Terrible, especially since you left,” I told her as Zach started the truck. “Don’t you miss this wonderful place?”

“Nope!” She replied as Zach drove down the dirt road leading to the highway. The baseball field was now visible, which just so happened to be inhabited by a bunch of hot, shirtless baseball players. One of them just happened to be Benjamin Pickard, the guy she had been crushing on since the 4th grade. She still had a major crush on him now that she was in 9th grade.

“Are you sure?” I asked, a smile playing on my lips.

“Alright, maybe I miss it a little!”

    “Then come back!!” I pleaded.

    “I can’t!” She replied.

    I pouted, “Why not?”

    She smiled, “Oh you’ll see.”

    “What?”

“We are going to a CCHS basketball game tonite.”

I raised an eyebrow. I had never been to a public school basketball game, and I heard that out of Jackson, Thomasville, and Clarke County(the 3 public schools in the county), Clarke County’s games were always the wildest. “Excuse me?”

“You heard me,” she said, still smiling.

Zach pulled up at their old, 19th century, Victorian style home. We got out and walked to the door, wiping our feet on their “The Coxes” doormat . As soon as they heard us walk in, we were greeted by Bo and Zorro, her two long haired Chihuahuas. Her dad, Jim, was sitting in his recliner as usual. We said hello and ran straight upstairs to her room.

I plopped down on her bed, “So about this basketball game…”

She went into her closet, “Don’t worry about it!” she exclaimed as she came back out with a CCHS basketball t shirt. She tossed it to me, “Now get dressed, we’re staying for all four of them.”

    “Four?!?!”

“Yeah, girls JV, guys JV, Ladies Varsity, and Men’s Varsity,” she explained.

“How long does that usually last?”

“About 5 hours, that’s why they start at 4,” she looked at the time on her phone, “which means we have about 20 minutes to get ready.”

My eyes widened. She had to be joking.

“Get ready,” she nagged. “If you go in that,” she looked down at my CPS cheer t shirt, “there’s a good chance you’ll get beat up.”

She didn’t have to say anything else. I quickly got up and started changing clothes.

She laughed, “That’s what I thought.”

I was lightning fast when it came to changing clothes, putting on skinny jeans, my favorite charcoal toms and the t shirt she gave me. I quickly straightened my air and did a few touches on my makeup. We ran down stairs and hopped in Zach’s truck as he and Jamie moseyed on out the door . We drove to the school, which was conveniently located just down the road from the school. We went in the back way through the school, without having to pay a dime. When we got in, the girls JV had just started playing, and there were already tons of fans screaming and yelling. It was intense.

I thought to myself, “Wow, it’s wilder than I expected.”

It was only girls JV, which meant that it was only gonna get worse from here.

I sat in the bleachers, waiting for Maggie to get back with the nachos. She finally got back just as the game was about to start. She sat down next to me and I quickly grabbed for a cheesy chip that had a jalapeno on it.

    “Having fun?” she asked.

“You people take basketball seriously around here!”

She smirked, “You haven’t even seen the guys play , the CCHS Hoop Squad has taken state 5 years straight, we take basketball VERY seriously."

I was about to say something when the buzzer sounded, signaling the start of the game. I looked out on the court and saw the most gorgeous person I had ever seen. I couldn't help but stare and eventually, Maggie noticed.

“I told ya that I had reasons for not being able to go back to Clarke Prep,” she said

“And they are very good reasons, but I must ask, does the reason have a name?”

“That is Justin Hoffman. He’s a sophomore, and he plays football, basketball, and baseball.”

My eyes followed him the whole time, “Damn he’s hot”

Near the end of the 4th quarter, the opposing team took a time out. Justin looked out into the crowd and our eyes locked for about 45 seconds. The ref blew the whistle and Justin looked away and continued to play. The game cam to an end, with a score of 94-19, CCHS on top. The team went in the locker room for about 5 minutes and was out quickly. Justin made his way out of the locker room and found his way to us.

“Sup Mags?” he said, looking at Maggie.

“Well I figured I better come see if you were good at something since you suck in health,” she replied, revealing that they had health class together.

He looked at me, his clear blue eyes piercing straight into mine, “Who’s this?” he asked with a soft look on his face.

Before Maggie could speak, I quickly replied, “I’m Madison, her best friend.”

“I don’t quite recognize you, are you new to CCHS?” he asked.

“Actually, I go to Clarke Prep, but I’m spending the nite with the Magster over here.”

    “Oh, okay”

The three of us talked for about another hour until Lewis, the school’s janitor/maintenance man/security guard made us leave. Zach had already left with Jamie and were off doing God knows what.

“Since Zach’s gone, let me take you home,” Justin offered.

“That’d be great, Justin,” Maggie told him.

He led us out to his truck. I quickly got in the front seat, making Maggie sit in the back.

“So where exactly is you house, Maggie?” he asked as he got I the driver’s seat and started the truck.

“Big white house towards the park,” she replied.

“Alrighty,” he said pulling out of the parking lot. As we passed the post office, he took out his phone, unlocked it, and handed it to me. “Put your number in there and send yourself a text.” He winked and looked back at the road.

I did as he told me to do just as he pulled up at Maggie’s.

“I’ll text you later, Madison,” he said, smiling warmly.

    “You do that,” I responded.

Like a gentleman, he waited until we were safely inside before he left. As soon as he left, we both squealed loudly.

“Girls, not so loud,” Mrs. Suzanne, Maggie’s mom, told us.

We nodded and ran upstairs, closing the door behind us. We jumped onto her bed and talked about what just happened until we fell asleep.
