    *Note- this is for beginners!

    Table of Contents

    • Using the right embouchure
    • Correct posture while playing the French Horn
    • Buzzing
    • Playing with a good tone
    • Tonguing

    Using the Right Embouchure

Using the right embouchure while playing is quite simple. For those of you who don't know what an embouchure is, it is the way you hold your face while playing an instrument. For French Horn, your embouchure should feel like you're blowing cold stream of air. It's natural. Don't poke out your lips, just regularly blow out air. Once you have that down, you should situated your mouthpiece so that 2/3 of it is covering your upper lip. Here is an example:

    Note**- This is not me!

    Using Correct Posture

Posture is very important, and can play a key roll in your tone. The first thing you want to do is sit up straight. If you slouch, all the sound will go into the back of your chair, and it won't sound very good. The next thing you want to do is line up your nose, your knuckles (on the keys), and your knees. If you are a small person, you might want to rest the bell of the horn on your leg. If you are a taller person, you might want to keep the bell up in the air by holding it up with your hand. Here is correct posture:

    Note*- this isn't me either.

    Hand position

Hand position is another very important part of posture. You should place your hand on the right side on the inside of the bell. It should be like a shelf holding it up. Here is an example:

Note*- None of these pictures are of me, and the following ones aren't either.

    Buzzing

Buzzing is where you take the mouthpiece, and make a buzzing sound. You use your embouchure (that you already learned how to use) and you slightly press your lips together to make a high buzzing sound. This can help you improve your range and tone.

    Playing With a Good Tone

Playing with a good tone is quite simple. Just open your teeth while you play! Not your mouth. If you open your teeth, your tone will sound much fuller and mature.

    Tonguing

Tonguing is used to separate notes. It is quite simple to master. All you do is touch the tip of you tongue to the part on the roof of your mouth where your teeth and your gums meet. Try and make it like you are saying "to". But don't actually say it, just use that articulation.

Alright, thanks for reading! I hope this helped, sorry if it didn't. I hope to make a more advanced, part 2 sometime soon. Please leave feedback and comments :)
