    Prelude

The girl sits there, taking pictures with her friends. She sends them to a friend who wasn't able to be their with her.

"Hey, Carrie! It's time for the countdown!" one of her friends yells over the music. She smiles and walks over to the television, showing Time Square, only a mile or so away from the bar she's at.

"Ten! Nine! Eight! Seven! Six!" everyone yells. Carrie feels a vibration as she yells with everyone. She pulls out her phone and sees a text from the friend she sent the photos to earlier.

"Five! Four! Three! Two!" they continue. As they do, Carrie reads the text message.

"The power. It's time to finally let it go," it says. She nods, as if someone is telling her this.

"One! HAPPY NEW YEAR!" everyone yells and cheers. A mere second later, everything shuts off. The phone shuts off, as if it died. The television shuts off and everyone starts murmuring and whispering, confused.

    "What happened?" someone calls.

"We are now powerless," Carrie whispers, pushing through the crowd. She walks to the car that worked earlier. She grabs a backpack and walks away from the bar. She watches people run like crazy, freaking out that the power in their phones, cameras, in the lights, stores, shops, restaurants, and bars has disappeared. She walks towards Time Square and soon a young man joins her.

"Ready?" he asks her, his deep voice quiet, almost a whisper in the chaos.

"To go without power?" she asks in reply. He nods, taking her hand. She smiles at him and whispers, "I will always be ready to go without power, and I know that my best friend, you, Josh, will too."

"You bet your ass I will," the man says, his name to be Josh, grinning. "It's time to show the world what it's like to be without power."
