Can Anybody Hear Me?

  1. Dear Diary (June 5, 2017),

I've just opened the first page of my new gift. I rub the pieces of paper between my fingers, the smooth white sliding effortlessly between them. The smell of newly opened paper intoxicates me and I'm stunned for a moment as I inhale sharply. My other hand holds a brand new, yellow pencil, twiddling it between my fingers. My ears are filled with cries of joy emminating from my fellow villagers.

A new supply drop came today and I managed to find you amongst the mix of other materials. This drop, along with the others, is courtesy of the United States Military. They've provided us with items otherwise unobtainable consistently for the past month; toothbrushes, children toys, books, food and more. As usual, many people rummaged through the crates and claimed food for themselves first, but I've been taught basic survival skills and I've learned some useful information since I've arrived here. I don't need food. What I need is, well... What I need is a friend. Not someone who can sympathize with me, I already have that. I need something that i can poor my thoughts and feelings into. Luckily, today this crate contained a notebook and writing utensils.

Being caucasian in a predominantly African American community made me an "outsider" of sorts. I lived and grew in the United States until the age of 10, when my father, my only parent, became too interested in his research. Slowly he became unhinged and quit his job. He studied underdeveloped societies, and decided it an amazing idea to move, not only himself, but me, to Somalia in order to "connect with his work" on a new level.

So, in preparation, I was taught how to kill, skin, and cook an animal. Of course, I had to be taught how to properly hold and use a knife as well. Playing to my strengths has assisted me all this time. My tiny figure helps me immensely. Not only am
I able to walk nearly silently, but I'm able to hide easily too.

Unfortunately, when I arrived at my new home, a tragic train of events followed that I am still coming to terms with, that leave me here. Alone. An educated thirteen year old girl living in a tiny village in Somalia, hardly able to feed herself and detached from society.

It's a surprise I haven't been captured and sold to the highest bidder.

    Signed with love,
    Your new owner; Amelia

So this is just a short intro for a new idea I've conceived. Basically this story is a series of diary entries that shares the experiences and feelings of 13 year old Amelia, and her life in Somalia.

Please leave comments, tell me if you like the idea or not. What I could improve on. All that good stuff.

    (May or may not continue)

  2. BUMP! That's it, a new story lol

  3. Argh! Just noticed some poor word choice and a couple mistakes :/.

  4. ._. Don't worry about it! I do more mistakes anyway.

  5. JESUS. I can't believe you called me a good writer! I saw the words: "dear diary" and I was captivated! Mistakes show you were dedicated to writing your story. It's unique and wonderfully written! And everyone who knows me, knows I love a good and unique story! Kudos to you my new friend! Kudos for giving a life to this adorable 13yr old.

  6. Although. Her thought process is much older than a 13 yr old. So be a bit wary.

  7.  I'm actually curious what you guys think my age is. Lol

  8. Your detailing is both fascinating and captivating! And the way you're planning to make this into one of those 'Dear Diaries' leaves me on edge. When Amelia writes in her diary, It's like she's writing a page of a novel! When most people write on diaries, they just describe it vaguely, but you write with such feeling and passion. I'd write a whole essay if I wasn't so tired!

Great story and I will be expecting more! 

  9. Indeed. I figure the events that have taken place or will take place contribute to her above average mental capacity, if that makes sense. :D

The beginning really doesn't explain much, but I do have ideas in my head as to some of the entries.

Thanks for the well thought-out comment! It's always great to have someone appreciate my writing. Although I do it for my own enjoyment, a bit of recognition goes a long way in inspiration!

  10. Thanks for the comment Emilya! The idea of the diary appealed to me, and I felt It fit well not only in the situation (A girl left alone in a third world country), but also fit my writing style better as I tend to be able to write better from a pessimistic point of view, and I'm not the best at writing "in the moment".

I do hope you continue reading. 

  11.  Same here Royale.

You guys all have the unique characteristics to make a whole publishing company! While Royale's story is passionate and simple, and Elysie's is outside the box, and Emily, is somewhat so creative, I love it.

To conclude, every once of gratitude needs a audience, so I appreciate the consideration and the time you took to type these compliments to heal my soul, it warns me.

  12. Oh please, continue! 

  13. sounds great. But I have experienced a lot of things in my life, and I have moved a lot and always been too mature for my age. But I think even then, even if I was mature as a 13 year old... There were some things I just couldn't grasp. Maybe collaborating that into your story, her confusion or frustration on those things would make the story even more amazing. After all, no one really knows everything, we find more and more things as we go on. Sorry for that, I like to leave critiques. I like to believe there is always room for improvement!

  14. It's truly great to see new fan fiction writers, as well as pre-existent members continuing to write. Although I do enjoy reading in general, it does seem there is a large amount of romance posted here and that's probably the least appealing to myself as a male.

For that reason I'm thankful to see new and interesting ideas introduced to fan fiction, and well written as well! Not only is it inspiring, but it is great to have a community where we can all support each other in a hobby we all love to partake in.

  15. Always. I'm also a poet and a songwriter.

  16.  I'm not do much....romancè.

  17. Elysie, I will definitely keep that in mind when I continue! I'm truly grateful for the critique, as I love to improve on my writing. Being that I'm always pushing myself to improve, it's nice to have other people's opinions so that I may do that!

My mindset for Amelia is aimed slightly towards a superior ego, due to her abilities to read and write In an area populated by illiterates, but as you say even a thirteen year old is not all-knowing, and I will be sure to incorporate some flaws in judgement.

  18. I get the whole annoying romance stories. I'd be a hypocrite if I said I don't like it, but maybe I just find it a tad bit annoying lately. I also agree with Elysie, about the whole confusion and frustration.

  19. I can't do poetry. Just doesn't work for me.

Nor can I do romance. Tried that with "Under the Covers" as an experiment and to try that genre, and it isn't for me. By the time my co-writer (Happiness_Sadness) and I had finished, we were both disgusted with the idea.

  20. I can be into romance, I am sure anyone can be. Honestly, I am a HUGE hopeless romantic. I think it just depends on how well it is written. You are very welcome! The story you saw was the only story I have written after a year or so. I am not very confident so I often stop doing everything I love to do because I don't want to waste anyone's time. ANYWAY. Enough about me! I agree with you. I love how lovely most of the writers here are!
