  1. Yes, it is named after a song by Taylor Swift. But it has a very big effect of this story I am writing. I hope you like it!

    Prelude~

"Always keep your eyes open, Akahana," my father had once told me. And he said it again as he was pulled away from me.
"Papa!" I called, watching him grow farther away as the soldiers pulled me away as well. I struggled to get away, knowing I had a chance. Suddenly, a soldier picked me up.
"Let go of me, you stupid dog!" I yelled at him. I continued to struggle, needing to get away.
"Akahana!" I heard, seeing my brother, Riku.
"Riku!" I yelled, pulling an arm out of the soldier's grip and reached for my younger brother.
"Stop, stupid girl!" the soldier yelled. He finally pulled us away, to the concentration camp.

If you haven't already figured it out, this is in the WWII period after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. It isn't in Germany, but in the United States. It'll make more sense as it moves along.

  8. Yes, but, after Pearl Harbor was bombed, the American soldiers put Japanese immigrants into concentration camps. Most soldiers were aiding England, but some were guarding the camps. Complex, but when you do enough studying about this topic, it starts to make sense. ^.^ And, I like that you point that out to everyone reading. It'll help them understand what happens layer on. And thank you all for reading. 

    Chapter 1

It was near dusk, and I was digging. Digging graves. Graves for fellow Japanese prisoners. Prisoners who had nothing to do with the bombing. The bombing of Pearl Harbor.
I sighed, looking at my nails. Dirt was plastered on my hands and under my nails.
"Hey! You!" I heard right behind me. I didn't turn, knowing what to do already. I started digging again, not wanting to hear the scolding from the solider.
There weren't many soldiers guarding the camp, as most were helping on the other half of the world. There were few, enough to run from. It would be easy to run at first, but I had tried before, and I was caught to be whipped later. Like the slaves, as one soldier had said.
I worked as the light faded behind the horizon, listening for the call from the soldiers, telling us it was time for the small, terrible meal they called dinner. They practically starved us.
"Time to eat!" I heard. I sighed, picking up the shovel that I had been using. I walked next to my brother, whom had also been told to shovel graves. We piled them up as we walked into the tent with the mush they called food.
We sat down, our trays of mush already waiting to be eaten. I waited until the soldiers weren't looking and gave Riku my food.
"You'll need your strength," I whispered as I gave Riku most of my food. I ate the rest slowly after I stopped Riku's protests. When I was done, I waited quietly, as I was supposed to, until the rest of us finished.
"Get to bed!" a soldier yelled behind me, my ears ringing afterwards. We walked to our tents, heads hanging. I walked with Riku until he had to go to his separate tent. I walked into the tent I shared with nineteen others, including my friend, Kenji. I laid on my bed as they left us alone.
I couldn't sleep, as usual. I laid there, awake thinking about my past, and what would happen to me.

    Chapter 2

"Akahana," I heard. I turned my head slightly and saw Kenji, setting up and looking at me.
"Yes, Kenji?" I asked, smiling at him. I remember how we met.

    About ten months earlier~

I shivered in fear as they pushed me into the dirt. I had just been captured, after I had escaped barely a week ago. I had wounds on my body, stinging from the dirt entering them. My face stung in general after they had hit me.
"Are you okay?" I heard the faint whisper. I shook my head, unable to speak since I was in such pain. I closed my eyes as I was picked up, my head resting on someone's chest. I felt myself being carried, my head bouncing lightly. Soon I was laid on a bed and I heard quiet murmuring where I couldn't hear who ever was talking.
Suddenly I felt the sting of my wounds being cleaned. I cried out in pain as I heard an older woman say, "Hush child. You'll be fine soon. Just relax."
I couldn't relax. I was in pain and I had no idea who was cleaning my wounds. I heard a boy ask, "What happened?"
    I didn't answer, but I fell asleep.
    Soon I woke, seeing a boy's face.
"Wh-Who are you?" I asked, starting to sit up.
"I'm Kenji, I brought you here," he said.
I stared into his blue eyes, curious. "Thank you, I guess," I said.
"What happened to you?" he asked.
"I ran, and I got caught. Guess I don't get that bad of a punishment," I explained simply. He nodded and smiled at me. I smiled back at him nervously, not knowing what else to do.

    End of flashback~

"Do think we could pull it off?" he whispered. I sighed. He was talking about running, like I had over ten months ago. At least, I think that was how long it was.
"Kenji, you know what happened last time," I said simply.
"But we could, together. We are fourteen now. We are smarter, stronger, wiser."
"We are weaker, not stronger. And we aren't wise considering we haven't experienced anything away from the camp," I argued. I sighed, knowing this wouldn't end. "Go to sleep, Kenji. You need to."
"So do you," he argued. I shook my head and smiled at Kenji, after all, he was right. I lied down and closed my eyes, falling asleep for the first time since I arrived at the camp.
