I'm back! Here is the update I spent 3 days on A loud rustle nearly made me fall out of the tree. I regained my balance and stared into the dark where the sound came from, hoping to catch a glimpse of something, anything that would show me what was happening. I couldn't see a thing. I was just about to stop and try to get some rest, when I saw a pair of glowing red eyes peering at me through the gloom. "oh, not another one..." I groaned to myself. But these eyes seemed different to your standard mutant eyes. Instead of bloodthirsty and menacing they seemed... Curious. Questioning. Inquisitive. The eyes vanished with a slithering sound before I could even reach for my crossbow. The other animals came back almost immediately. Howls, growls, squawks and hisses filled the air. I wasn't safe in this tree. But I was even more unsafe on the ground. I would normally just freeze to stop myself from being noticed, but it was too late for that. Countless pairs of red eyes were watching my every move. They were watching, waiting. Wondering if another creature would attack first. A wolf mutant leaped at me, trying to climb the tree. I shot it down easily with my crossbow. Big mistake. All the creatures started to advance towards me. Some trying to climb the tree, others waiting, expecting me to fall. I considered leaping to another tree, when I looked up and saw the amount of eyes watching me from the branches. It was as many pairs as there were below me, if not more. I was trapped. Upwards seemed to be my best option. I started to climb, shooting any creatures that got too close. I climbed higher and higher when- SNAP. I fell, scratching myself on leaves and branches as I went down. I tried to grab onto leaves and branches to stop myself from falling, but they only slowed me down. I landed hard on the ground. I stood up and checked for wounds. My foot hurt alot. It was probably broken somewhere, but I just managed to stand. Blood flowed out of a deep gash on my arm. I would have tried to stop the blood coming out with moss or something similar, but there was no time. I stood up properly and looked at my foes. I was surrounded on all sides, with no means of escape. Even the trees were full of them. I was going to die... Or so I thought. I started to shoot , but I knew I wouldn't be able to kill them all. I was running out of crossbow bolts. I knew that I would get attacked as soon as I was weaponless and vulnerable. I tried to shoot a path out of the mutants, but every time I shot one down a new one appeared. I kept shooting, determined to go down fighting. What would happen when I stopped? I hoped to have a quick and relatively painless death, but I was more likely to be ripped apart. The thought of it made me queasy, so I stopped shooting for a few seconds to throw up in a bush. I would have been killed then if not for the strange figure that leaped in between me and the mutants. The stranger came crashing through the trees, wielding a very sharp looking sword. He also had quite a few knifes in his belt. I stood up and tried to get a better look at the figure. He handled the sword with ease, slicing and stabbing the creatures. I thought I didn't know him, until I saw the mop of dirty blond hair on his head that I definitely recognized. "LUCAS!?" I shouted above the noise of killing. Why was he here? How did he find me? Are the others here? A million questions went through my head. "STEPHANIE! WHERE THE HELL HAVE YOU BEEN ALL NIGHT!? WE'VE BEEN WORRIED SICK!" He replied. I decided now wouldn't be the best time to answer him. I kept shooting the animals until I ran out of ammunition, and after that I borrowed one of Lucas' daggers. Many of the animals had run away, so our job was alot easier. Once we had killed the mutants, we sat down to clean our blades and tell each other what had happened. I told Lucas how I had gone hunting, not realized the time and had gotten lost on the way back. Direction had never been my strong point. He told me what had happened to him. "well after you left, Abigail took us to your parents house. She said something about there being more room for everyone. At least you won't have to sleep next to Arthur anymore." He said that with a slight smirk. Why would abigail take everyone to our parents house? Surely it would have been painful for her too. Oh well, I suppose I would have to get used to it. At least we would all be together now. "we waited there for ages, wondering where you were. We agreed to just wait for you to come back, but I sneaked out anyway." "it's lucky you did. I would be dead by now otherwise. How on earth did you find me?" "I didn't. It was just pure luck." "did anybody notice that you left?" "I don't think so, but we should be getting back before they do." We stood up, and I immediately sat back down again. I had completely forgotten about my arm, and my foot had gotten worse. Before I could say a word, Lucas cleaned my arm and bandaged it. "thanks." I said. "no problem. Can you walk?" He asked while putting his water and extra bandages back in his bag. "I'm not sure..." I got up and tried walking, but I had to clamp a hand over my mouth to stop myself from screaming in pain. He took one look at my face, picked me up and started walking back. I was slightly stunned at the gesture, and didn't really have anything to say. "I... Umm..." "it's fine. You don't have to say anything." he said, not looking at me. He seemed to be thinking hard, trying to remember the way he came. After about half an hour of walking, we got to my parents house. He gently put me down. "Thank you..." "it's ok. I would do anything for you." I looked up at him. "really?" I asked, the sarcasm barely audible. "really." he said, and he leaned down and kissed me. I kissed back, not wanting this moment to end. Why was I enjoying this so much? Surely I couldn't love him. Before we could pull away, the door opened. "Umm... Is this a bad time?" asked Arthur.
