Prologue My name was Jane August. I was nine years old. Nine years old when my father took my brother, James and I one night and escaped to London, England. We had left Richmond, Virginia because of my mother. She abused my brother and I. Often we'd be kept from school due to obvious bruises and cuts all over out bodies. My father couldn't take it anymore and though he got a divorce, that didn't stop her from trying to contact my brother and I. It came to a point where our father had enough. In one night he packed bags for us and we left in one night. Over time we were granted legal access and citizenship into England by the name of Carrier. My father, John Carrier. My brother, Dylan Carrier. And me... Lynn Carrier. Over more time... I had forgotten everything. My previous life. I had to forget, I had to... Jane August was disappearing from inside of me, and Lynn Carrier was now consuming me. I was known to my school, friends and neighbors as Lynn Carrier. That was the life I lived now. I was grateful to my father for taking us away and hiding us... but I was unhappy because I wasn't myself. And I never would be again.
