  8. Over the weeks, she changed.
Not like I had, of course. Clarissa changed quickly, nothing gradual like myself. Also, she wasn't the type to suddenly be rebellious. Oh, no.
    She was popular.
People flocked near her instantly. Her awkwardness was replaced by charisma; and lots of it. She cut her bangs and dyed her hair an obnoxious blonde, much like Leah's, only it seemed a bit more natural and had a handful of different highlights. She got rid of her glasses, and wore contacts, had better clothes, better posture… better everything.
What I couldn't understand, was how I was so put off by it all. Leah's followers took in new people and transformed them into snobs all the time. But Clarissa was different. She had some sort of air about herself, one that I couldn't explain.
    "You mean like yours?"
Jade and I were walking home, swinging our backpacks lazily from side to side. The only difference was that she'd return to her parents.
    I wouldn't.
"What do you mean?" I replied, keeping my gaze fixed on the streets ahead.
"You both have this… bizarre aura. I dunno." She struggled to find her words for a moment. "Yours is a bit darker, no doubt."
I shrugged, ending the conversation without a word. What I truly wanted to do was confide in her, to not have to hold anything back, but I couldn't. That was reckless.
After we parted ways, I approached my house and quickly unlocked the door, stepping inside. It felt warmer than usual, and I was greeted by the scent of dinner floating to my nostrils.
That, and a pair of muscular arms encircling my waist.
    "Welcome home, Persephone."
I smiled lightly, not bothering to look up. "Hey, Ian…"
He smirked, running his lips along my neck. I shivered at this, and blushed lightly. After all this time, he still affected me as if we had just met.
"Today's a bit special, love." He murmured.
"And why is that?" I replied, shutting my eyes as he gently kissed my cheek.
All he could say was "A meeting," before Susan walked in the foyer, her expression slightly amused. "Get a room you two."
I immediately turned bright red, and Ian rolled his eyes.
"Dinner is served." Susan began to walk to the dining room, before pausing at the doorframe. "Sorry if I interrupted anything." She said smugly, continuing inside.
As we made our way down the hall, Ian looked thoughtful for a moment.
"You wouldn't mind if I invited a few people, correct?"
"No, I wouldn't… how many, to be exact?"
    "Including Susan, six people."
I slowed down, running the simple math problem through my head a few times. Six plus one equals seven.
"Ian? What's taking her so long?" A voice sounded.
"I thought she wouldn't be shy by now." Another piped up.
Ian smiled comfortingly, and led me into the dining room.
Eight total chairs. Two of which were empty.
    …it was almost like a dream…
