Strangely, Clarissa was in the majority of my classes. It wasn't that bad, though. She was an intelligent girl, no doubt, but she was really awkward. Awkward as in accidentally walking into people, not making eye contact with anyone, self consciously tucking her hair back… she was the epitome of what I used to be. I realized that I couldn't stand my former personality, and was actually grateful that I had changed. "How contradicting of me… I didn't want to be like this before…" I thought, passing through the lunch line. Clarissa had followed Jade and I like a lost puppy, and had the same expression as such. Was it bad that I wanted to push her away, like she was an insignificant fly? Clarissa fumbled with a pair of serving tongs, attempting to put salad on her tray. Jade gave me a look, widening her eyes in exasperation. I sighed, quickly assisting her, and ushering her to the register. Clarissa left a line of impatient students in her wake, apparently they formed there after waiting so long for her to finish serving herself. Jade spoke in a hushed tone, gritting her teeth. "Don't you dare leave me with her!" "I have to, Jade"- "Are you really that bad at math? Get your parents to let me tutor you instead of Mr. Hall." I blinked, swallowing back an onslaught of tears. No matter how desperately I wanted to tell Jade what happened, I couldn't. I'd be sent off to an asylum. "…I'll stay for a bit. But I really have to go." My voice cracked, and before Jade could ask anything of it, I occupied myself with eating an apple, biting into the skin with a crunch. Clarissa was blissfully enjoying herself, happy to have people to talk to, much to the chagrin of the others at the table. I noticed two girls scoot away from her slightly, but Clarissa was too caught up in her world to notice. "Uh… Clarissa?" We all looked up, curious to see who'd want to see Clarissa. My eyes widened in confusion. Leah stood there and flung her platinum blonde, obviously dyed hair over her shoulder, doing a great job of ignoring me. "Yeah?" she asked, not at all phased that one of the most popular girls in school was talking to her. "Come sit with us." she nodded back to her table, where the other stereotypical suburban socialites sat. "You don't want to sit with these guys." My eyes narrowed at her, and Leah turned noticably paler. Clarissa seemed confused, and opened her mouth to respond. Leah simply took Clarissa's hand and tugged her away, before she could say anything. Jade and I looked at each other in confusion. "…how? What? Why is Leah asking her to sit with them? Not to be mean, but she isn't the type to fit in over there." Jade shrugged, putting in her earbuds. "Hey, why should it matter? She isn't here anymore." She was right. Clarissa wasn't sitting with us anymore. Soon she'd disappear into that group of people. But why did it still bother me? --------------------------------------------------- An update. A short one, but it's still an update! I'm trying to get back into the swing of writing. Bear with me. e.e
