The Reaping

Tiffany's POV

When Finnick Odair died, Annie Cresta was carrying his twins. Daniel was born on the last day of the year. I was born on the first day of the next year.

President Coriolanus Snow died 13 years ago. I was born exactly nine months after his death. But President Paylor was assassinated, and Julian Snow, Coriolanus Snow's grandson, took over. He reinstated the Hunger Games. Except now it's more deadly than ever. That's why it's called the Death Games.

The reaping. It's today. For eleven years, I had nothing to fear. But today, I have finally come of age. My birthday is the reaping day.

Daniel, my 13-year old brother, has never been chosen. But I know that's only because I was too young. The Capitol wants entertainment. What is better entertainment than seeing two siblings fight to the death?

I slip into a sea green dress with long, flowing sleeves in honour of my father's eyes. If I'm doomed to go to the Capitol, I might as well show some signs of rebellion. That all of this is wrong. That I do not accept my father's death. That I do not condone.

I take my time, trudging slowly towards the dining room in my sea green heels. They click against the marble floor. Daniel, dressed in a sea green shirt, a white jacket, a matching pair of white pants and white leather shoes, looks up from his cereal. The sadness in his eyes is impossible to miss. We will be going to the Capitol in a matter of hours. He knows that one of us will have to die for the other to return alive.

I notice a tear spill from Daniel's eye. Before I can say anything, he silently leaves the room.

Mother passes me a bowl of cereal. But I don't have the appetite to eat anymore. No matter what Mother says about needing to eat more for the Games, I don't want to eat. I leave the room too and go to Daniel's bedroom. Without even bothering to knock, I enter and sit beside him.

He looks up at me with a sorrowful expression. His voice cracks slightly as he speaks. "Don't think about me. When we get there, forget about me. You'll win this way. Please, do it for me. For Mother, and for Father too," he says.

I shake my head. "No, Daniel. We'll be allies. I'll make sure you don't die."

He retorts sadly, "What if it comes down to the two of us?"

I smile, "We'll think of a way." Daniel laughs, agreeing with me.

As we leave the house, I see Mother's eyes are red from crying. I silently vow to bring Daniel home, for Mother and for Father. And for me.

Daniel's POV

I put on a façade, knowing that the trick with the nightlock berries won't work this time. I smile and lead Tiffany out of the house. I promise her both of us will make it back alive. But I know I won't be coming back.

Aqua Marine's POV
District 4 Escort

It's time. The reaping. Everybody knows that Finnick Odair's and Annie Cresta's twins will be reaped. Daniel and Tiffany. Their golden blonde hair stands out in the crowd. "Ladies first!" I put on a fake smile. I slide my perfectly manicured hand into the girl's reaping bowl. The number of slips inside are uncountable. But I know for a fact that all of them have 'Tiffany Odair' on them, written in careful handwriting.

I pick out a slip and unfold it. Sure enough, it's Tiffany. "Tiffany Odair!" I yell, taking great care to hide my feelings of pity and sorrow as she steps up on stage, her golden hair flying in the breeze with only a woven hairband of crystals tinted sea green to hold it back.

Next, the boy. I rummage through the reaping ball and pull out a slip. I open it, and read off the name. But it isn't Daniel Odair.

It's Nicholas Hawthorne.

 

Mwahaha!!  What will Daniel do? Volunteer to protect his sister? Keep quiet so when Tiffany returns, both of them can return safely to Annie Cresta? Stay tuned and I'll have another update soon!! 
