    ----------------------------------------------
    I couldn't believe what I see.

A girl stands before me, a tall, lean girl with cerulean eyes, a sharp nose and rosy lips parted ajar. Her thick, dark hair is rolled scruffily into a bun, thick waves escaping the mess of the bun. Her skin was pale as snow, forming a contrast between her jet-black hair. Everything about her spoke of beauty. Her flawless skin, long hair, and perfect height radiated perfection. I wondered who was the lucky guy who brought her to the ball.

I stared at her, and she simply stared back, wide-eyed. Her blue deep-set eyes, flecked with gold, displayed sheer curiosity. Her angular cheekbones blushed crimson. I was about to say something when I heard the hush of footsteps. I turned around, and locked my eyes with a handsome guy of sixteen. I was stunned. Bronze hair, green eyes, tanned skin. He looked familiar, someone I frequently saw at class. He walked over to me and smiled.

"Hey there, gorgeous." He grinned. I was about to ask him who he was, when I remembered.
He looked so perfect, so faultless that I almost couldn't recognize him. He was like the girl I saw before. I turned to look at her, surprised to find she was looking at me too. I opened my mouth as she opened hers, and we did so in perfect sync. Then I laughed. So did she. I shook my head and whispered to myself. The prep team did the perfect job of making me unable to recognize myself.

"Idiot." I snorted. I shook my head and looked up. "Derek." I smiled, and he smiled back. I felt the warmth of his smile envelop me. Suddenly everything around us melted, and only us two remained. I gazed into his eyes, and I was pulled back yesterday at school, under the shade of the dogwood tree.

The sun was low in the sky. It was our afternoon break, and ever since the bell's peals started echoing around the campus, boys were trying to score out their dates for the upcoming Acquaintance Ball. I made my way through the crowd to the cluster of trees near the running tracks.

I leaned against the rough tree bark, staring at the notebook on my lap, scribbled with empty words from my mind today. It was my afternoon ritual to visit this place and write down whatever I could. I doodled whichever figures I could come up with; everything felt so random and pointless. I continued for a minute or two, my thoughts pointing to different directions. The Acquaintance Ball, the most spoken-of event of the season. I planned not to attend, since nobody really intended to ask me out. It may be a bit lonely to think about it, but I expected that it would happen. I stood up, gathered my stuff, when somebody stumbled out of the bushes and looked up. It was my classmate, Drew. I felt strange being with him when we're the only two people around. I never got a good look at him, never had a convo with him. He spoke first.

"Umm...Reece..." His voice faded as I heard loud snickers from behind the trees. He frowned and was about to step back when I grabbed him. "It's ok. Go on. They're just being jerks." At this, he got encouraged. "Yeah...Reece..." A pause.

"Reece, will you go out to the ball with me?"

I stared at him, fazed. Drew Hatchers wanted to go out with me? To the ball? What did he want in me, an unpopular girl with nothing but a sickness in her eyes? He seemed so unearthly with his hazelnut eyes and messy brown hair. He's the kind of guy that could qualify for hot. Why would he pick me out of all the girls in the school? Why did he choose me out of Marion Parker, Lisa Saunders, and Chelsea Roberts? I tried to say a few words, tell him I should have a moment and think about it, but none came out.

I looked at him and he frowned, then said "I'll take that as a no, then. Bye, Reece." Before he left he looked at me with such intensity that I wished I could melt on-the-spot. I stared at him openmouthed, as he left my afternoon spot. I cursed myself for being so tongue-tied. "Wait," I muttered. Clumsily I stumbled after him, calling out his name.

"Drew, wait!" I gasped. "Wait!" I shouted. People started staring at me, and I did my best not to notice them. I asked Jake Devin where he was. He pointed to the cafeteria. I walked up to him, and was about to tell him, when I heard a sunny voice say "Of course Drew, I'd love to go out with you."

My heart sank. What did the girl mean, go out with Drew? Did he intend to ask out both of us? Or were there any more girls left? I let out a groan of confusion, when she continued talking. "But I already have a date. Sorry Drew. Maybe next time I suppose?" I peeked at the girl. Marion Parker. Blonde hair, black eyes, curvy hips. I could see why Drew asked her out. When she caught me staring at them opened her mouth, and I left the scene.

I lounged around the benches across the running tracks. I let my thoughts run, trying to pacify my mind. I pressed my palms to my face, trying to process everything I saw. My heart ached at the thought of Drew easily giving up on me, even though I knew I had no absolute right to do so. I let out a sigh of frustration and closed my eyes. I heard music playing by, a strum of the guitar, a lyric of a song. I tapped to the rhythm, losing myself in it. I opened my eyes trying to find out where it came from. A group of runners waved by, and one of them called, "Hey, Reece!" He winked at me and his mates grinned. I smiled. I knew they saw me earlier. They hovered at my spot for a minute. "Schmidt! Get your butt in here in a flash!" their coach yelled. "Well, that's my cue to leave," he shrugged. They left, and I waved goodbye. I almost didn't notice a flick of bronze by my left side.

"Hi Reece," he said. Derek Simmons. He was my classmate. He was seated five feet away from me, a guitar in one hand. He strummed it carelessly and raised his eyebrows at me. "Must want some alone time," I said to myself. I gathered my belongings. He looked at me with a different expression in his eyes. "Wait Reece, wait." He left his guitar on the bench.

I turned to him with an annoyed look, and he said a little bit slyly,

"Reece, go out to the ball with me, would'ya?"
