Catch Me If You Can

She rushed past the mirror in the morning on her way out glimpsing in for just a second. In that second, it was no longer her face. She saw other people. She saw that one popular girl's cheek bones and that weird guy that always picks his nose's chin. She turned away quickly wishing she'd just see herself in the reflection.

~Beep. Beep. Beeeeep. Beeeeeeeep. As Charlie turned over to hit sleep one more time he looked at the clock: 7:45. He had to work in 10 minutes.

"Shit," he muttered under his breath jumping out of bed and throwing on a loose flannel shirt and jeans. He grabbed his watch off his desk and ran downstairs, kissing his mother goodbye on the cheek, and went out the door.

He turned the keys in his old pickup and the engine stalled. He turned harder one more time before the car hummed to life. He pulled out the driveway and drove down tbs street noting the girl out early running in her sports bra and spandex. Pulling his eyes back on the road he tried to concentrate.

He had exactly seven minutes to get to work before his boss would count him as late. He tried to coax the truck into going ten over the limit but it just wouldn't budge. He sighed resigning himself to the fact that he'd probably be late. Again.~

She grabbed her bag and bike and went out the door. She started pedaling towards the train station feeling the relief of exercise flood her muscles. It had been too long since she'd last done this, but after what happened last time she just couldn't bear to get back on. Pedaling harder and taking a deep breath of air she flew down the street hair streaming behind her.

Hopping onto the train she took a sigh of relief knowing that it was too late for anyone to change what was about to happen. She settled into the burnt orange polyester seat and looked out the window as the town rolled away. Finally she was gone.
