His small fist hits the table and it trembles with fright. He has forgotten that she was a very sensitive leaf and she was scared easily. He gently pets her to calm her, his gloomy gray eyes storming, his black hair mussed. The other one lifts a careless eyebrow. He touches her once and she is still, because like most things, she was enchanted by his touch. "Really, Twiggy, was that necessary?" the fair-haired one says in that odd musical voice that confused the mind. But this did not confuse his companion whose mouth was in a straight line. "She's late. And don't call me Twiggy. I'm Oak now." the fair haired one, Storm, rolls his eyes. They sit in the small but cozy kitchenette, the hearth fire burning steadily, the odd magic that made the fire green and warm but not too warm, also made it clean-burning, like one might compare propane to, but much more complex. They wait as their tea grows cold and the day turns slowly into evening, until a burnt figure with charred silken robes and an ashy face crashes through the door. "I'm sorry I was late, won't happen again, won't happen I really promise!" the figure blurts out as the two males stare at her in slight amazement. She becomes uncomfortable under the two very different stares. "What exactly did you want from me, Twiggy?" she asks, her hands tinkering with her braided ink-black hair, pulling out random pieces of charred wood calmly. Her big scarlet eyes look at him earnestly. Twiggy, I mean Oak, I mean Twiggy looks at her with intense and chiding eyes. "Cinder, I mean Fire, I mean Tinder," he stuttered, trying to find the name she went by now-a-days. "It's Ash now! Isn't it pretty?" Twiggy smiles and says "Well, Ash, we were supposed to discus your mission."
"Oh yeah, my first mission! A thousand years and finally my own mission! Lilly and Sap won't believe it!" she chittered as she buzzed around with her flaming wings like a dragons in style. She looked at him, her elven eyes gleaming with anticipation and impatience. Storm puts a casual finger up. She is quiet. Storm smiles at his brother and the fire spirit looks at him obediently. "You were saying, brother?" "Yes, well, you're uh...a free spirit that fire often is, and I think you need a companion, par say, someone who will guide you and help you in your first mission to the mortal world. It will be different and probably terrifying. Storm has graciously volunteered to guide you." Twiggy said carefully. Storm nodded calmly. Ash fluttered nervously, because Storm himself gave her the shakes. She was afraid that if she got on his bad side...she would pay.
The brothers, Storm and Twiggy, you see, are the high advisors to the High King who ruled over the kingdom of natura, Latin for nature. They themselves were young still, being born in 330 A.D, long before man had become the monster he was. Natura is sole reason that the Earth hasn't died yet. They are the silent protectors of the Earth, the nature of things, what they do, however, remains a secret... Storm looks at Ash with her pale face and silky robes colored with the deepest of reds to the lightest of yellows, that seemed to be a roaring fire every time she moved. She is afraid of him. She has every right to be. He would be concerned if she wasn't. She fidgeted. "So, um, what is my mission?" "Ah small one, you will understand when we arrive in the mortal world. Things will be terrifying, make no mistake. Especially these days, when nature is choked and weeded out by all humans. The air will burn in your lungs, the sky will be dreary by day and starless by night. This place is the one that currently requires assistance-The United States of America. It is a place where nature is slowly dying, everywhere you look, people are heartless and insincere. But you are a lucky one." He pauses and absently feels the tiny thrill that came with each mission. "You do not have the difficult and complicated tasks that your seniors do." Storm soothed, as he felt her jitters were not solely based on him. Twiggy's stormy, lightning filled eyes clear and he smiles, trying to be helpful. Ash is not afraid of Twiggy. He was not terrifying, yet he had his brother's odd, addicting charm which was usually not wielded by the serious-faced spirit. Ash decides that he was as dangerous as his brother, but her heart tells her that he would not wield his power if not completely necessary. It also tells her that Storm is someone who was to be avoided, and someone to be feared.
Storm smiles his dizzying smile and tells her "Your mission will begin a week from now. This time will be used for you to learn about the mortal world and it's mechanics. Since I will be taking you out to the world, I will be the one teaching you about it." Twiggy looks at her again, trying to make her feel better. It works. Ash knows it is simply built into him to look so charming, but she knows this is unintentional. She would much rather prefer that he come with her. Storm looks at her once more, his gray eyes sparkling. She remembers the rumors, she remembers how people gossip about how they think Storm is evil, but they don't dare say anything, knowing his power, as they are cowards. They would much rather Twiggy be the only advisor. Yet Ash knows Storm's presence helped Twiggy. No matter how much they loved him and disliked Storm, they cannot deny that Storm was his support beam. They see it. Twiggy seems to always look to his brother, always seems to get strength from his presence. Twins often has this feeling. One was strong, the other weak. They had an odd sort of charm to them, and they needed each other. The strong one needed the weak one to keep them grounded. The weak needed the strong for support. Twiggy looks at Ash stands, and clasps her hand in his, the size of their fingers quite different. For his race, his hands were large. The soft shock that came from touching other lesser spirits was magnified that would otherwise feel like a bolt of electricity, but Ash can withstand volcanic eruptions and forest fires. She only feels a little jolt. "You were born for this. No matter who is with you, you will succeed, little one" He touches her lips with his and wards off bad feelings, a customary goodbye for one with a difficult journey. She respectfully bows. Storm simply does the human gesture of moving you hand from side to side. Much easier than warding off bad spirits, albeit a less heartfelt one. Ash leaves their small tree home and flutters in the night sky, filled with eons and eons of stars and galaxies. She flutters home to find everything is as it should. Her pet dragon purrs a huff of smoke. She dreams of no stars and no nature. It's a grim world.

The next morning, Ash finds Storm waiting outside her home. This is slightly terrifying. She almost stops fluttering her wings altogether and looses altitude. Storm graciously bows. Recovering, Ash manages to bow. Her heart is a hummingbird as she invites him inside, hoping that Lilly and Sap are not going to come over. Storm smiles "That is sweet, being so fake towards me.We both know you don't want me inside your house. " Ash sputters in embarrassment. Storm flies away, making sure she is beside him as he continues to speak "You'd much rather have my brother. I know it. You've fallen quickly, quicker than most. Usually it takes them a few minutes, but you fell when he looked at you." Ash is about to protest, but Storm silences her. "My brother, you see, is very focused. He does not notice if one is female, if she is gifted in her womanly attributes, like all are, he does not care. All he cares about is business, helping the High King with his affairs, all the small, microscopic details of whatever big is going on. You, my dear, are convinced you will somehow be different, that he'll notice you, love you, all of them do. He never does, sweetheart. I am his other half, I know his deepest, darkest secrets and he knows mine. The affairs of the heart are just not his style, my dear. He might sire a fledging, but only if it is necessary. He will likely choose the element spirits most incompatible with himself, a fire spirit. If it is you, I will not be surprised. He likes bravery. You have much of that. He will not, however, love you, no matter what you do or say." Storm says this in the beginning, being sure that she knows. Ash feels a surprising wetness well in her eyes. She does not realize it, but she is head over heels for Twiggy. A deep gnawing feeling in her heart agrees with Storm. Luckily, she is not a hopeless romantic. Storm feels relief as acceptance fills her eyes. She will not be distracted by her feelings, not this one.
