So I graduated with my AA at a community collrge not too long ago and I am finally headed off to a big university where I will live on my own and finally be a "big girl". My question to you is: How was/is your college life going?
I had an exceptional college life. I don't regret any of it. The one thing I'd do over is stay on campus. I missed alot of things like partying in dorms! Lol! I say enjoy college life. Your #1 priority should be studying, and partying should come afterwards. Good Luck!
Hm. I'm living off campus about 2 miles away. I want to be really involved and stuff but i have to pay my own way for school which means less fun and more work.. ): what was your major?
I have a bachelor's degree in Political Science/History. I minored in Criminal Justice. I went on to get a Master's in Social Work and Criminal Justice. I'm currently working on my PhD in Criminal Justice.
So I'm assuming you liked criminal justice more? Lol that's really awesome have you had any road blocks on your way to your degree? Anything that was very challenging?
I understand having to work to pay for college. I attended university outside of my home state so tuition was costly. Despite scholarships, I still have to pay a great portion. It wasn't easy, but it was definitely worth it.
The challenge was being away from family. I couldn't just drive around the corner to my parents' house. I attended college away from home. I didn't know one person when I arrived in Texas. However, after graduation I decided to stay.
I'm in a state and we have this program for the entire state that if you do well in high school and meet certain criteria that they pay for a portion of your tuition for up to 120 credits. But it's not enough for books and cost of living and such. So it definitely will be a challenge. I'm definitely freaking out.
There are other programs that may assist with the costs of books and living. Grant programs and scholarship programs are available. Books are expensive.
Grants are hard to get because my parents make too much money and my EFC is like $11000 a year which is really dumb. But I'm going to try. Did you get any loans?
I got loans for one of my masters programs and my first semester of my phd program. I don't recommend unless extremely necessary.
I'm a freshman at the University of Texas which is four hours from my home and I don't have any problem at all living on my own. Even at the start of the year I think everyone felt comfortable that was a freshman. My major is electrical and computer engineering but I don't like it so I'll switch to either mathematics or another engineering. I will be applying to switch my major during the middle of next semester so I will be doing investigating on which major to pick until then.
Oh yeah and my university is 50,000 people but the size isnt a problem at all. In general, I am someone that doesn't like to be around a lot of people or big crowds but the size doesn't get to me at all. So the amount of students shouldn't be too much of a concern. Your classes will likely be bigger but it's ok cause you can still ask questions in office hours if u don't ask in class. As for working during college, I suggest getting a job on campus that lets you do your homework while doing your job. I've seen people work at the front desk of tutoring centers that just swipe students cards as they come in and other than that they are allowed to work on their homework.
I'm hoping I can get a job like that. Like I said, I've been in college for 2 years already but I've had to commute an hour and I lived with my parents while holding 2 jobs so I've done a lot to get where I am... It was so hard but now I'm going from 3,000 students to Florida State University. Which is much larger....lol
