wat kind of rule is dat random selection of winners for a talent/art contest? 🧐 Dumbshit Equal chance sure but not all contests are meant for everyone, otherwise why have a contest? Contest supposed to be a deal breaker for really talented ones, it's not a charity to give everyone a chance to have something
We had both judge picks and random selection. Judge picks are based off of what the specific judges enjoyed- so that's where the talent aspect is especially highlighted. All of the entries are appreciated, and there were a lot of creative entries, so instead of having just 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place with judge picks like usual, this opens the opportunity to give more prizes to more of the amazing entries. 🖤 Charity is giving away something with nothing in return. This isn't charity, everyone who was selected through the spinner participated and submitted in the contest.
I also want to reiterate that this is not and has never been a contest, it is an art challenge. I can see where the confusion is since we had it in the contest segment of forums, but the event has functioned as a way to help creatives continue to grow, not to pick a specific "best" among them.
Congratulations to all the winners! 🩵 But tbh, I was a little disappointed with the random selection rule as well, anyway, still gave it a try and just submitted some of my artworks that may fit to the theme. I'd just to put my two cents for that rule. I am an professional artist and been working professionally in the industry. I was disappointed for the random selection rule. I'm not saying that those randomly selected are undeserving, they are, especially the crochetted cute creature, I really love that. 🩵 I am saying the rule itself. Since I read that this tradition is to help creatives grow, I don't think the random selection helps. In my own perspective, growth in art typically comes from constructive criticisms, acknowledgment, and learning from the strengths and abilities of others. When we reward joiners randomly using the spinner like a raffle, the contest missed to encourage specific or outstanding qualities that are notable, which could be inspiring or educational for all, be it the technique used, the skill, etc. When artists see what was appreciated in others' work, it can empower them to push their own creative boundaries and improve their skills—to be better than the version of themselves. Random selection spinner thing, on the other hand, can water down this focus, sending an unintentional message that might leave participants feeling their efforts were undervalued. That's it. Just wanted to share my thoughts. 🫣🩵
Hello! Thanks for the feedback. I can understand some of these points for sure, I do want to add some clarity to our thought process behind doing the random selection. Phobia and I are both also professionals in the art field, and share a lot of the same sentiment toward art and development that you are describing. "In my own perspective, growth in art typically comes from constructive criticisms, acknowledgment, and learning from the strengths and abilities of others. When we reward joiners randomly using the spinner like a raffle, the contest missed to encourage specific or outstanding qualities that are notable, which could be inspiring or educational for all, be it the technique used, the skill, etc." To this point, I fully agree that critique is essential to growth technically and professionally. For this event though, our focus hasn't ever really been on technical ability or improving that, but rather to give anyone the opportunity to try to build on creativity. Through the years we've had many of the same participants, and we love to see how they've grown throughout the time. Some haven't gotten the opportunity in past years to win, so we aimed to give everyone the equal opportunity to win as long as they participated since we were handing out over 3x the prizes. Again, I don't disagree with your point, but we did consider some of this prior to the start and wanted to overall drift away from a traditional "art event".
Wow glad to know that! 🥂 Yeah I am fully aware about the event is not about the skills. Been joining this challenge for years, but this is the first time you have this random winner selection. And I agree with the goal of encouraging creativity for its own sake. However, in this case, the event seems more focused on engagement and inclusivity over challenge, which is why you guys are“drifting away” from the usual art challenge format and adding the random selection of winners. I just find the event aimed at growth (as mentioned prior) and the random selection thing misaligned. At the end of the day, it depends on the event’s goals—if it’s meant to support growth as mentioned, then a merit-based system makes more sense; if it’s meant to engage everyone equally, then the event aligns with its aim, even if it diverges from typical contest norms. ✨ Thank you for this healthy and informational discussion! 🩵🥂
