Y'all acting like Disney are colorblind and hired her for her talent not because they had a discriminatory diversity quota to fill. I don't buy that narrative. That quota wasn't about melanin content, it was about race. It didn't focus on the original story and logic behind mermaids' appearances, but focused on "the needs of the modern audience" who is apparently racist and thirsts for its next ~select race~ character. This is still tokenism and it doesn't belong in the Disney classics. Disney should have more integrity than this.
We don’t care what was Disney reasoning behind making her Ariel. It’s still going to sell and I’ll definitely be spending my money to support a black actress. I’m pretty sure all these lil white girls will still be going to see it. White folks wasn’t the only people watching mermaid growing up. Ariel wasn’t ever stated that she was white, that hoe is a fish. Don’t quote or debate me. Go debate with your old ass granny.
Jesus christ that is the most base argument. I'm gonna keep posting my point because people seem to be ignoring it. Would just like to add that her "race" is not relevant in the original story at all, but nobody said anything about race except Disney. It is her skin tone that is significant and reflects her sheltered life under the sea.
Tbh I don't really care. There will always be revisions of past characters and I think that's perfectly okay imo.
Im not White! Im Brown and to be uttlerly effing honest i would get equally pissed if they casted a brown girl as Ariel too! Ariel is Ariel!
If we retelling a classic in modern times and you want her to be white might as well have her choke on plastic and die halfway through the movie while you're at it.
The fact that your fave childhood character being casted black instead of white is what is bothering you is FLABBERGASTING. Do you know about the babies held in cages on the southern US border?
I’ve never heard of Halle Bailey until all this controversy and although the news was shocking, after doing some research, I can say she fits the role of Ariel perfectly when it comes to her voice. I’ve never heard anyone sound just like the classic and I think that’s why Disney couldn’t afford to let her go. It will be interesting to see her play such a visually iconic character when she doesn’t fit the description at all but I’d rather see her play as Ariel with that voice than some girl who fits the description but doesn’t have the vocals.
Plot twist: They will edit the whole movie and make her skin color white. PS. No hate here, it was a joke. I don't care about the color or race. Remake doesn't mean it needs to be the exact same thing. It's 2019, everybody.
